Back from NST...not good

Galena99Galena99 member

The NST was fine, but the bio physical profile showed low amniotic fluid.  The midwife said "c-section tomorrow" which I said no to.  I wanted to go home, drink lots of fluid, rest and retest.  I didn't see u/s tech test for fluid and when I asked if she was, her response was "no" so I don't really trust the results.

They were okay with that, but are prepping the room for a c-section anyway.  I go in at 6 tomorrow, get the bio physical profile done again and take it from there.

I REALLY need to go into labor tonight...

  • Thanks.  Besides labor dust, I can use any other tips (declining c-section?) that can help me out tomorrow.  I told them they'd have to take me kicking and screaming into the OR.

  • Did your MW assign your fluid level a number?  I've heard that 5 is generally where it goes into dangerous territory, but it varies by doctor.

  • I think she said 2.5, but since I didn't even see her measure the fluid I have my doubts.  I am chugging water like I'm a fish and I am currently eating as much watermelon as my body can handle.

  • Seriously, sit in a tub or go swimming before it, for like at least an hour. I think also having AFI in the afternoon is better (bc you're usually a bit dehydrated after sleeping all night). You could also refuse to come in for the u/s, or only agree to a non-stress test the day after tomorrow. I would also insist an actual u/s tech measure the fluid, that is fishy she did it herself

My MW went into a panic with DS1 bc my AFI was low for a second day in a row (it was also not done by an actual tech), and was ready to induce me, but she ended up asking an OB who was also on call what he thought, and he told her to send me home since the NST test was fine.

I would lean towards not doing anything - if the baby's fine, the baby's fine, right? Has she checked your cervix? Will she do gentle induction methods? I know Iris has said it before on here, but it bears repeating: if the course of action wouldn't be "c-section" if you were a first-time mom, then it shouldn't automatically be "c-section" just because you're a VBAC.

Also, I was thinking you're going to be 42 weeks tomorrow. If you're only 41, I would just refuse to come in, but agree to a nst in a few days. Have someone else talk to her if you don't want to. Stay strong!!

  • I don't know if they said they'll redo tests to "humor me" and figure the fluid will still be low and that's why the OR will be set up, or if they think it will be fine by tomorrow. I don't know how long it takes fluids to go back to normal levels. The issue I'm having is that I have to be in at 6 am, so how could I possibly cancel? Nobody is in any office right now. Unless I go in and refuse c/s after the test. After my last c/s I vowed to do everything possible to avoid another one, so I want to make sure I cover all bases.

  • I don't quite see how they can say low amniotic fluid is a reason for a c-section?! Amniotic fluid replenishes itself until the baby is born, so even if your water breaks you are still making fluid, the reason why a woman's water can break and she can be in labor for 24 hours plus! I agree, I'd go kicking and screaming into that OR unless something were seriously wrong with you or baby!

Ack, yeah, I wasn't thinking of the 6 am thing before.

I think your only option is to not go in, and call your MW when you know she's at the office or on call (I'm assuming she'll be at the hospital waiting for you?). The thing about showing up is that once they have you, they will do everything in their power to not let you leave. It sounds all paranoid when I type it out, but it's pretty much true. I would call, be polite, and tell her that you are okay with more non-stress tests, or even AFI u/s, but you're not willing to talk c-section until you are actually 42 weeks (with the assumption that the baby is showing no signs of distress, etc). If you google around about low AFI, it isn't shown to mean much of anything, especially in very late pregnancy. This is a link that might make you feel better, too: https://misskalypso.blogspot.com/2010/09/low-amniotic-fluid-levels-time-to-panic.html I hope it works out for you!

  • I hope things are going your way this morning.  Everyone had great advice.  I also want to say, that the OR is always "prepped."   They are not preparing the room just for you.  That's just a trick to make you feel guilty.
