We're heading out on a road trip with our almost-3-year-old DS tomorrow -- 7 hours on day one; 4 hours on day two. Our last road trip with him was more than a year ago, and he was still on the paci at the time...which I'm pretty sure was a lifesaver
. Tonight I'm going to pick up a few new books, a sketch pad, and some new markers, and load up the iphone with some kids' movies. I've got some alphabet flash cards he likes that I thought we'd play with. And then I'll just hope and pray he sleeps a lot. Any other tips?
Re: Road trip
We have been taking DS on 7 hour road trips multiple times a year since he was born. I used to pack 9 million activities and now I have found the easiest way to keep him happy is the DVD player. He holds his blankets, eats tons of snacks, and watches movies the whole time. I figure if he is happy and quiet, the trip is a success.
If you can plan the trip around naps go for it. Also, be prepared to make more stops and let him run around rest stops to burn energy. At this point DS can go a whole trip without getting out of the car (except to go potty). We just don't make a big deal of it and he thinks its normal to just sit and drive.
Good luck and go with the mentality "everything is going to be great!" I swear that mentality makes stuff like that work out well. If you assume the trip will suck, it probably will.
