How long did you charge your iPhone before turning it on for the first time? I have no idea what a full charge looks like or how long it takes and am finding mixed answers on the web...(thanks, Google.)
I'm pretty sure the guy at the AT&T store took it out the box and turned it on for me (switched up the SIM cards) and I walked out with an active phone. I didn't charge it before turning it on or anything, it was ready to go.
I'm new and just a lurker, but I've always heard you're supposed to "calibrate" items such as computers and cell phones. You turn them on with what charge they have when you first get them, let it die, then charge it back all the way. It's supposed to get the fullest battery power.
I used it right out of the box and wore it down to dead, then charged it to full. My understanding is that this is how you get the most space and life out of the lithium battery. If you haven't already, go to Settings > General > Usage > Battery Percentage On, I can't live without the percent.
