Trying to Get Pregnant

TTC Dr appointments

We've decided to start TTC in the next month. I've been taking pre-natal vitamins for months now as my daily vitamin. I know that I need to check out TCOYF but I have a question about doctor appointments. Should I only do a pre-conception appt with my OB/GYN or should I also see my PCP for a physical?

 TIA

Re: TTC Dr appointments

  • I did neither. I just started charting and having unprotected sex.

Unless you  have some question about genetic counseling or some concern about the health of yourself or your husband, there isn't really any need. Just please continue your yearly pelvic and paps.

    HELLO.

  • I just paired mine with my yearly checkup. The only thing that really came about from my precon appt was that I got blood work for STDs which I hadn't had before.

  • I kind of  had a preconception appointment with my OB/GYN, three months after we started trying.  It was actually just a Q&A opportunity she offered me when I told her we were trying.  At first, I thought wow, how sweet of her to take the extra time to answer all my questions.  In hindsight- waste of time

Fertility Friend is more of a preconception visit than you'll likely get with your OB/GYN- unless they offer courses on charting, checking CM and how to use an OPK.

As far as seeing you PCP for a physical, as long as you're in good health and you have no issues, don't waste your time or money.  If it's something you've always done or want to do, just to make sure you're in good health, cool.  But don't run to your PCP for a physical just because you're TTC.  Good luck to you!

    LOL. Thanks.

I appreciate the responses. I just had my yearly in Jan. I'll stick with fertility friend and TCOYF.

  • I hadn't planned on doing a pre-conception appointment but I'm actually due for a PAP next month so I'm just lumping it into one appointment. That way I don't have to spring for a second co-pay.

I don't think it's entirely necessary other than getting to know your OB/GYN better (or in my case, going for the first time... my pcp did my paps until now) or if you have specific concerns about getting pregnant.

When in doubt, talk to your doctor.

  • I totally suggest a preconception visit! For me my cycles were very long and all over the place. So I went and talked to my Dr. and found out I have PCOS. Also I got alot of blood work done so I also found out I had no immunity to measles, mumps and rubella. Also, I needed to get my whooping cough shot updated. All of these you should have done pre conception and with the MMR shot you can't get at all while pregnant! I totally suggest it just to make sure everything is in working order. If you go there and you think you wasted your time. You wasted what like 1-2 hours... it is a lot better than TTC for months and then finding something wrong that could have been fixed in the beginning. Food for thought! GL! Smile

  • I hadn't gone to the gyn in a long time because the only reason I went yearly was to get more BCPs! ha! So I booked an appointment for yesterday a while ago.

By the time yesterday came I had all kinds of questions about my OPKs, light AF low or no EWCM, and if it is possible that I am not Oing. Her response was to relax and have sex every other day from CD 10 - 20. She said if I don't get KU doing that after 6 months a feritility specialist would consider that "really trying" and would work with me on next steps. So that was that and I am officially (working on) relaxing!

  • I went ahead and scheduled one since I've been BDing unprotected since 2008.

So we've only been really really trying (charting, BDing every other day at least, etc) since November.

I have finally got an appt to go in on Tuesday anyway. Bc we've BD'd a lot since 2008.. eesh.

  • A pre-conception appointment is pretty useless, honestly. We just went off BCPs around the time of my annual exam, so I went to a new OB/gyn for that and mentioned TTC, just in case there was anything else for her to tell me. There wasn't, so I'm glad I didn't go in specifically for that. It's up to you if you want to go to your OB/gyn or your PCP for your annual. I always went to my PCP until we were going to TTC, at which time I decided it made sense to meet the doctor and get familiar in the event of a BFP.
