Food Allergy

Introduction: Egg White and peanut allergy

Hello! I usually post on the over 35 board but I was referred over here.  My one year old son broke out in hives at his first bday party after eating and smearing cake frosting made with egg whites all over his face.  Poor Guy! :(

Our ped decided to do a Rast test to check for allergies.  Sure enough, he came up allergic to egg whites and peanuts.  Both were in what is considered the "moderate" range.  The ped advised us to avoid both of these, but didn't recommend an epi pen and didn't seem overly concerned.  She did want us to hold off on one of his shots until after she speaks with the allergist.

I guess the good news is, he could have been allergic to a lot more... but still, as it sinks in, I'm sad to hear that he is at risk for allergic reations and won't get to enjoy some of the foods that we love... like peanut butter!  I guess this is part of the process.

Well, I just wanted to introduce myself and my son, Charlie.  I am hoping to learn and share info on this board.  I guess my first question would be: what works as an egg subsitute while cooking?  I've been am ovo-lacto vegetarian for 20 years (Charlie has so far too) so I am used to subbing, but I have always relied on peanut and egg.  Time to start fresh! Confused

  • No epipen? really??? that would scare me. Knowing my child has an allergy and i have no epipen.  At his age, his levels can go up or down at any point and it's a nice piece of mind to have.  I would get an allergist asap and talk to her/him.

Don't stress over PB.. if he can have almond, you can give him almond butter.  the fresh grind one is delish -i actually like it more than PB.  And as far as eggs goes, it sucks but you learn to substitute.

Here is a good link regarding substitutes

I use Ener-G or mix flaxseed meal with water.  here is a recent thread about it..

Like pp said, apple sauce is a good one. i might start doing it that very soon.

    good luck and welcome

  • Welcome - but I am sorry to hear about your LO's allergies.

I use applesauce as a substitute for egg in baking.  I think it's 1/4 cup of applesauce for each egg.  I rely on the Food Allergy Mama cookbook and she has great recipes and substitutions in her book.

I have to say I am surprised your pedi didn't get you an RX for an epi-pen.  Food allergies are not to be taken lightly and that is especially true for peanuts.  When is your appointment with the allergist?   You will most likely walk out of there with an epi-pen to keep with your LO at all times.

    Good luck!

I am really surprised by this.

DS2 is allergic to egg yolks, egg whites, and peanuts (his peanut/nut RAST testing was really F'd up so we are doing nut free for him).  I use Sunbutter instead of peanutbutter.  Pretty much looks and tastes like peanutbutter.
