If your child is lactose intolerant, how did you know?
We had DD on soy formula due to a "sensitivity" to the milk based one. But our pedi (Dr Chang) wanted us to try whole milk at 1 year, not soy. He said try it for at least two weeks before switching. Well, I'm pretty sure she is having "sensitivity" to the cow's milk again. She has these dry patches all over her skin and lately she's been waking up crying at night after about 2 hours. Her tummy also seems unusually pot belly-ish after she has milk (that could be completely made up in my head, though).
Should I at least try something lactose free or maybe soy? Any recommendations on a brand? And, go figure, I just bought a new gallon of ORGANIC milk today. Damn.
Re: Lactose Intolerant?
Actually - the issue may not be lactose but the dairy protein itself. Baby N has issues. She is 1 next week and we are going to retry dairy by introducing milk and seeing how she reacts. She's had issues since she was a couple weeks old. I was bfing and had to cut all dairy from my diet - that includes anything w/ dairy protein, so baked goods, etc. Very doable just takes some label reading. We retried at 9 months and her skin went crazy. Eczema, diaper rash and more spitting up. We cut the dairy back out and she was much better.
It doesn't take them long to react to dairy. But it takes dairy two weeks to get out of their system. I don't know what we'll do if she has dairy issues still. I don't like soy b/c of the phytoestrogens, so we might try goat milk since it's not supposed to have the same issue as cow. But if that doesn't work, we may try almond or rice milk.
If I were you, I'd probably quit the dairy, see how you LO does and then make an appt w/ your pedi to reevaluate.
