Taking DD to the DR

I took DD to the Dr about 11 days ago with a runny nose, cough, and one case of a low grade fever (99.4) and Dr thought it might just be allergies so DD has been on Zyrtec daily for 11 days. The only reason I took her to the Dr in the first place is because she was going to stay at Grandma and Grandpas for a week and they live 250 miles away. I didn't want her to get really sick while she was with them and they have to deal with it.

Anyway, I called today and made another appt for tomorrow because she just doesn't seem to be getting any relief, and now she is coughing at night and in the morning sometimes bad enough it makes her gag. The cough is really phlemmy (sp?) in the morning and seems to dry out in the afternoon. She hasn't had any more fevers, but I feel like I am pushing Allegy meds when she may have something else going on. On top of that, when I called to make the appt, the receptionist asked me "what is wrong with Sydney now?" in a snotty voice....what I guess I am concerned with is, Do you think I am overreacting by taking her in again? She has been sick now for a total of 3 weeks...shouldn't this subside with medicine, at least a little? Any advice is welcome....maybe they receptionist was just having a bad day? Oh well, LMK what you all think! TIA!!

My DD had the same thing and we assumed it was allergies because everything was clear and she was only coughing and phlegmy at night. We gave zyrtec also, but it really didn't seem to help much. It was really bad for over a week and she finally has relief now. I had the exact same thing as her, so I'm thinking it's something that's in the air right now. As long as it's clear and your Dr. didn't think it sounded like it was in her chest then I would probably ride it out. My FIL is our Dr. though, so I always ask him or have him look at her when he's over or we're over there if I'm concerned.

  • I say absolutely take her. I always would rather take the kids in even if it turns out to be nothing. If her cough is getting worse, that's a reason to go in. Even if it is allergies, maybe the medicine isn't working for her. Good luck. The office staff should NOT be treating you that way.

  • Thanks for the advice from both of you, I did end up taking her in. The CNP I normally take her to said it was good that I brought her in because she has had this for 3 weeks with no relief. She said we may have misdiagnosed the allergies and put her on zythromax (sp?) and antibiotic. She said even if whatever it is was viral, she should be seeing some relief by now. I guess we will see, she should be starting to feel better soon!
