Re: To paci, or not to paci?

  • I love the paci.  Babies just need to suck sometimes and I would rather it wasn't on me all the time! lol I haven't even thought about when I would decide to ween her from it.  We don't give it to her all the time so I hope she won't get to attached!

  • LO was given the paci at 2 days old. I got tired of being a human pacifier. Anyways, we haven't talked about weening her from it yet, but we don't give it to her unless she wont take anything else or I notice she is using me again. She only sleeps with it now though.

I am hoping by about a year when I ween her from the boob.

  • He takes a paci sometimes ... but nothing regular.  If he starts to rely on the pacifier, we will wean at 12 months.

  • I try to give him one once in a while (or more often, a grandma successfully pops one in). So far, I'm not worried about taking it away because he doesn't really like it.

He doesn't seem like a strong sucker. He'll just suck on his tongue a bit when he's dozing.

  • I wasn't planning on using a paci for my LO but he was in the NICU due to low blood sugar and he didn't want to take a bottle so he had a feeding tube, so I allowed them to give him a paci because I was hoping it would jump start his sucking reflux. He started feeding well the next day so I don't know if the paci helped at all but I was certainly glad to see the tube out of his nose!!!
  • Big paci users, here. Beau is almost 7 wo, and he's a big paci sucker in the evenings when he needs to soothe himself. We plan to wean starting at 12m.
  • I was sooo against it with Addy, and that didn't get me far. She's 2 1/2 and still uses one for sleeping!

This time, I wish I could get Avery to take one and stop using me as her human pacifier. But, I've tried 6 different kinds and she just gags on them and gets pissed!

  • I use one when it seems like she just wants to suck but isn't truely hungry.  She doesn't have it in all day long, and we don't really put her to sleep with it because she starts crying when she drops it, so its easier to not bother with it.

If it becomes more regular, I will wean her when she is a year or so I guess.  Hadn't thought about it.

I got lucky and she liked the first ones I tried and bought (Avent)

  • H uses a paci and received it in at about two days old (when I was still BF'ing). He uses the paci to self soothe and we're totally okay with that.
DD used a paci and we weaned at two years old (and at that time it was only being used in the crib).

  • DS never took it and he was a fussy baby. It made my life hell. lol

We gave one to her in the hospital and while she doesn't use it 24/7, I like to use it to soothe her occasionally.  Like today in Target, when I was trying to find SOMETHING to wear, and she was melting down. It was a total lifesaver.

I say, go for it. Paci, all the way :)  If you can get your DD to take it.

  • I wish DD would take a pacifier. We weaned DD1 at 2 years and if DD2 ever does take one, I'd probably do that again.

  • LO usually only wants it when I'm getting her to sleep, and she spits it out once she goes into deeper sleep.  I've also noticed that she wants it less and less...like last night and today she kept going to sleep without it.

I don't want her sucking her hands or fingers, so if she doesn't naturally wean herself off it, I will think about how I'm going to do it around 7 months, definitely taking it away from her by a year.

  • I'm still trying to get my kid to take one!

  • I gave mine to DS at 8 days old.  He's just decided he likes the orthodontic ones better (born free, to be exact) than the soothies ones (those were all he'd take at the beginning).

Although, he doesn't take it when he's really upset, but if he's just a bit fussy sometimes it helps to settle him.

We plan to wean before a year.

  • Thankfully he only needs it to calm down from being fussy or during a diaper change and not all the time, but we were planning on trying to wean him off when he starts teething. I don't know if we'll stay with it, we might wait until the one year mark but I have friends with 4&5 year olds who still use them and I refuse to have that be my son!
  • My DD is a definite comfort sucker. The doctors after delivery had a strong suspicion that she was a thumb sucker in the womb, because her thumbs had blisters on them.

While she is sleeping if the paci falls out, she sucks on her arm. I put her down for a couple minutes to run to the bathroom and put the sooth and glow seahorse on in her bassinet with her, so she could look at it. In about two minutes she was sucking its nose. (And this was after she ate)

I don't know when we will wean her from it. I was a late paci sucker as a kid--maybe 3ish? And my husband was a thumb sucker until about 4 or 5. So right now there is no time frame.
