vitamin supplements?

i went to the doctor this morning for my daughters one month check up and the doctor told me that i need to start vitamin d supplements since i was excusively breastfeeding. (has anyone else been told to add vitamin d supplements to your baby's diet?) i know that very little vitamin d gets pass through breastmilk, but are supplement really needed? can i just continue to do 10-15 minutes of sunlight in the morning?

Re: vitamin supplements?

  • In Miami, yes, you can probably get away w/ sun (as long as baby is wearing few clothes).

I live at the north pole, so supplementing is a better option. I 've been told to do it by a dozen different health care people. D Drops are the best b/c it's just a drop rather than a full dropper full.

  • Our pediatrician told us to start DD on Vitamin D drops at our one week appointment.  We've just recently started them.  I guess you could get away with just taking Baby out in the sun in Miami, but I'm paranoid about sunburn and keep her well covered up.

  • I am in San Diego and the pedi told us to do them when we were discharged from the hospital. LO likes them.

  • We were told this too, but our pharmacy doesn't carry them? So haven't started them yet.

  • I've been using Tri-Vis-Sol (sp??) for now until I can find D drops somewhere. I figure the rest of the vitamins can't hurt! It's easier once they are eating cereal because you can mix them right in.

The adult dose is 1000 IU and the baby dose is 400 IU, so probably not.

    Carlson D Drops

(For the Canadians, well.ca sells them, as does Shoppers Drug Mart)

  • Our Dr recommends Di-Vi-Sol or Tri-Vi-Sol for all breastfeed babies and we live in Tucson so we get plenty of sun here. Target sells them however when we went they were sold out so we got Poly-Vi-Sol which is intended for older babies but the Dr. said it was fine for us to use.
