Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When do you stop using a sleep sack?

My 8 month old DS has started pulling himself up on furniture. When do you stop using a sleep sack. And if you don't use one... what do they sleep in to stay warm  because I know that I still shouldn't use blanket.

Re: When do you stop using a sleep sack?

  • Hmm...my baby sleeps with a blanket.

  • It's too hot here for blankets of any kind. Many babies are using blankets at this point but we always used a sleep sac instead, for warmth. We stopped using it in March or April, so around five months.
  • Maybe a blanket is fine now?? I guess it still wouldn't keep him warm because he'll just play with it like a toy!
  • I JUST started using a sleep sack, like in the last week.

You could dress him in long sleeves and pants.
  • I hope never. I love the sleep sack! My child loves to play 'peekaboo' w/ her blankets, towels, shirts, so I'm hesitant to give her a blanket to sleep with also, though I'm sure I'm being paranoid. :)

  • Jack has never slept with anything. In the winter I would put an undershirt under his jammies, now he's just in his jammies.
  • Ian still uses a sleep sack but he is starting to outgrow it. Once he does it will be warm weather here and he won't be using sleep sacks (or blankets). Then once the fall hits and it is cool again will be start using blankets.
  • My 20 month old still uses a sleep sack. She has never had a problem standing or walking or crawling in her crib.

  • I stopped at 4 months with DS. He just wears cotton footed jammies now. I would be okay giving him a light blanket at this point if it were chilly, though.

  • We stopped sleep sacks when it started warming up (so in May between 7 and 8 months old). We started giving him a blanket to sleep with at that point. The blanket he has is a baby afghan with the holes in it, so I'm not concerned about him putting it over his face and him not being able to breathe.
  • I basically stopped as soon as the warm weather came, now DD sleeps in cotton footed pj's, as we have central a/c and she might get a little chilly at night.  The fleece sleep sacks were just too warm.

  • I use a cotton or muslin sleeveless sleepsack in the summer and a long sleeve fleece one in the winter for a very long time. They are fully able to walk around in it but it keeps them from being able to get their leg up over the side of the crib.

  • We still use it.  And a blanket too!

Olivia used her sleep sack even after she started walking Embarrassed

  • I used one on DD#1 for over 2 years.  Yes, years.  They make them in toddler sizes now with holes for their feet, so I just bought larger ones as she grew.  She was a wild sleeper, so even after she was plenty old to use a blanket, she was ALL over her bed, and would get cold at night.

    I loved those things.
