Trying to Get Pregnant

Ladies with hypothyroidism...a question for ya

I was dx with hypo in early May...my TSH was 6.9. I was put on levothyrozine (sp?) and just got the results of my 6 weeks levels. My TSH is now 5.9 and my OB said that was a normal range and to keep taking the current dose of meds. (Free T4 was 1.3)

From what I've researched online, most endocrinologists like levels for women TTC to be between .3 - 3.0; or even below 2. I am trying to get in to see a endocrinologist because of what I've read.

Do any of you have experience or knowledge from an endocrinologist, and/or know what levels they like to have women TTC at?

Thanks in advance!

  • You are right -- I would not be happy with a TSH level of 5.9. You are on the right path in looking for an endocrinologist to treat your hypothyroidism. My TSH is currently just under .5 and both my endocrinologist & RE are happy with it there.

ETA: The most common TSH range I've read for those TTC is 1-2, but it will depend on your DR.

  • I would definitely go and see an endocrinologist!! A TSH of 5.9 is too high--especially if you are TTC. My endo likes to keep my levels around 1.

  • Thanks ladies - that's what I was afraid of. I don't want to wait any longer, but the endocrinologists in my area are very busy. I hope I can get into one soon!

  • Hope you can get one in soon. I am not sure about the range my dr wants me in although my dr doesnt know we are TTC (just started 2 days ago). I do know your numbers sound high though. Maybe call and ask them to call you if they have any cancellations.

Shop around and find an endo that will take you sooner rather than later.  Though it doesn't always, untreated hypo can lead to birth defects or even a miscarriage if not at the right level. As PPs have said, 5.9 is too high.  That's actually what my levels were when I began Synthroid.  An endo will know that the new standard is around 0.9 for women trying to conceive.  Also, an endo will check your levels until they are regulated and see you throughout pregnancy.  Make sure you ask for a full thyroid panel to see what kind of hypo you have.  Good luck and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

  • Thanks for all of your advice. I was able to get an appointment a couple weeks out with an endo. In the meantime, I called my OB and told her that I've done some reading and that I had read that levels should be between .3 and 2 in women TTC. They called back and said that we could try a higher dose to reduce my levels. I feel much better being proactive and starting a higher dose while I wait to talk to an endo. Thanks again!!
