Postpartum bleeding ?

How long was your postpartum bleeding bright red?  I'm still experiencing bright red (but not heavy) bleeding 3 1/2 weeks postpartum, which I thought was normal until I read that it should fade in the first several days.  I'm planning to call my doctor this afternoon, but I wanted to check and see if any of you had experienced this, and if there was any issue that needed to be resolved (like an infection).

Re: Postpartum bleeding ?

  • Totally normal.  I had bright red blood for 2 1/2 weeks after a very easy labor/delivery.

ETA: But of course if you are worried it would never hurt to call.

  • i was bright red for 2 weeks. Then at 3 weeks i picked up my sons carseat and took him out for a couple hours and started bleeding heavily again. I went to the drs and she said it was my body telling me i am overworking myself. Then at 5 weeks i took him out bc he was going crazy and i started bleeding again!!! its crazy how my body knew when i was doing stuff i shouldnt be. I also had a c-section after 32 hours in labor so that could be it too.

  • My little one is almost the exact same age as yours, and I'm still experiencing bright red bleeding.  With my first, I bled for about 6 weeks, though it was more spotting for the last two of those weeks.  The bleeding is definitely heavier the more active I am.  My midwives say this is totally normal.
  • I thought it was pretty typical until I started reading articles saying that red bleeding after ten days can be a sign of infection.  Since it isn't heavy at all, I'm assuming (based on your experiences) that it's the result of my being active and traveling out of town this weekend.  It had faded a lot before then.  Thanks, everyone!

  • Me! I had my baby 3.5 weeks ago and I am still bleeding bright red. My doctor said the information in books and the internet about bleeding is inaccurate and that most women experience some form of bleeding for an average of 50 days! So you are still in the very normal zone :)
  • I bled for about 3.5 weeks but the nurses at the hospital had told me that it could last up to 5 or 6 weeks. I did end up with an infection about 2 weeks pp and the symptom that brought me into the Dr was burning/pain. At that time the Dr said that I was still bleeding more than expected and told me I needed to pump some more to get my uterus to contract (I am FF but pumped about once a day at that point). I would say bleeding is normal but if you are having any discomfort def call the Dr!
