Travelling with Bugaboo Cameleon....

Have any of you that are already Mommies and have the Cameleon tell me how easy it is to travel with? I'm leaving to NY on Thursday and I'd love to be able to take my DS thru the airport in the stroller (we went in Feb. and I carried him and it was a nightmare). I will be borrowing a friend's bugaboo transport bag and my intention is to gate check it in the bag.

Has anyone done this? Were you given any problems due to the size of the bag?

Re: Travelling with Bugaboo Cameleon....

  • Most people won't use their Bugaboo to fly with because they are so expensive and the possibility of damage is too high.

From what I've read it's popular to take an umbrella stroller for thing like this, it's much less of a financial burden it that gets damaged over the Bugaboo.

  • If you really want to take the Cam, I don't see an issue with gate checking it in the transport bag, the bag is very nice and will protect it.  I have one as well and we haven't traveled yet, but if we did I would borrow my friends transport bag.

However, I wouldn't push the Cam through the airport because I wouldn't want to be breaking it down to store in the bag at the gate, I'd take a cheap umbrella with me or since we are at the age where I have to buy a ticket for LO I would actually bring his car seat and use one of those wheeled car seat things for the airport, then he can sit in the car seat on the plane.  I would check the Cam as luggage in the transport bag, FYI - most airlines don't count baby gear as luggage and you can check it free, but check with airline.

I live in NYC and have a chameleon. LOVE it, but going through airports is a pain is the arse. Did it once, and never again. Went and bought myself a Maclaren Quest for travel (which we do a lot of). you can take it through the airport and gate check it with no problems. What I found annoying is, I had to break it down at security and the frame does not fit through the scanners easily. Then, you have to break it down again at the gate. Hard to do all of this when traveling by yourself while holding a baby. I would honestly look to buy a Maclaren. It is pretty standard in NYC for majority of parents to have a city stroller with large storage (like a bugaboo) and a Maclaren for subways, buses and traveling. As well, if you are going to be in NYC, the Maclaren is a lot easier for taking on a subway. Good luck!
