Toddlers: 24 Months+

At the end of my rope (sleep)

DD has been throwing fits at bedtime, naptime and when she wakes at night. She gets out of her big girl bed and screams and cries for me(she has a child proof door handle so she can't get out). I rock her until she's drowsy and put her back in bed. She will do this over and over for up to 2 hours some nights! She has been waking up at least once at night and waking almost an hour earlier than she used to. This has been going on about 2 months! We have tried letting her cry and after 20 min I can't take it, I know she would go forever. What do we do?!

Re: At the end of my rope (sleep)

  • it may sound harsh, but I think I would let her CIO. I've done that with DD since she was probably about 6 months old as I recall - she knows we mean business.

When my mom is here - she knows she can get away with more and becomes really whiny - only because she knows if she does that, Gran will cave. She knows it doesn't work with us, so she rarely even tries it.

    Just my two cents...

  • When you say she screams and cries, is it a scared scream/cry? Think they might be night terrors? DS is the same way when he has a night terror. Otherwise he sleeps perfect.

I totally agree.  20 minutes is nothing!  I'd give it at least 2 hours before intervening.  She will NOT go on forever.
