Toddlers: 24 Months+

Toddler bed transition tips? Concerns...

I have a 22 monther who can crawl skillfully out of any pnp or crib. He only crawls out at our house maybe 2-3 times a week, and goes right back in. He stays in 12 hours at night and 2-3 hour naps.

However, it is taking him longer than usual to fall asleep, crying more, and wanting to be rocked.

He crawls out of the sitters pnp daily (is there 2 days a week though) and only sleeps an hour. He has never done great in pnps though.

I have considered just keeping him in the crib for a few more months though. If he was to get out of his toddler bed in the middle of the night and I didn't know it, he would likely stand on his rocking chair and toy box, turn his fan off and on, and open his dresser drawers to take out the clothes. He also empties his changing table of diapers, paste, lotion, etc.

So while I don't think he's ready to be on his own in there, I don't want him to get hurt in the crib. I'm fine to sit outside his room and continually put him back in bed until asleep, but I have concerns about him getting up after I've gone to bed. He can't open his door and come into my room, so short of crying, he can't wake me up.

Ideas?

  • I know it dosn't help but I am in the boat with you. We have a big boy bed for him now and we tried it one night. I slept in the room with him and about 3 am he was up and playing. It took him a long time to go to sleep. He is back in his crib for now as we finish painting and setting up his new room. Once that is done we are moving him to the bed. Our problem is our bedroom is on the 1st floor, which I don't like. So I will sleep upstairs on the spare bed a few nights to make sure it goes well and my husband can get some sleep for work. Calvin sleeps great through the night so hopefully that works. He can open doors so we will put a gate on his door even though we have a gate at the top of the stairs. (I worry)

This is what I was going to suggest.  If DD figured out how to crawl out of her crib I would try a crib tent before trying a toddler bed.  I'm pretty sure she would not stay in a toddler bed during nap time & would be up super early in the morning.  I'm just not ready for that & neither is she.

  • I just was at the pedi today, but this is what he said when I asked about him in and out of the room (we haven't decided to move him yet, but we're talking tonight): Take an old door and cut it in half and put a hook and eye/loop lock on the outside. it's enough for them to see the hallway, but they won't be in and out and around the house while you're sleeping. I personally think it's a crazy idea, but maybe it works...who knows. I don't like the idea of locking a kiddo in there (even if it's half of a door and we can easily get them out). My pedi has been awesome, but this piece of advice was a little crazy to me....take it or leave it! lol
