Trying to Get Pregnant

Secret Society of Temping

Anyone else feel like you are in one of those? What I mean is, the very few times I have talked about TTC with my likeminded friends, they look at me like I am speaking another language when I mention temping, charting etc. I get the sense that they feel it is a little extreme or something, so I have clammed up about it since. To each their own, and I personally find comfort in knowledge of my patterns and charting temperatures. Do you find you are either the only one, or one of the few among your friends that know about and/or utilize BBT and FF?

Re: Secret Society of Temping

  • I get the same thing. Although none of them are TTC at the moment. 1 has a daughter and may be ttc #2 in a few months & the rest are not at that point yet. They all think I'm crazy. *shrug* It gives me a piece of mind so I'll keep doing it :)

  • Only one of my closest friends is actively TTC, so she is really the only one I share all of the gory details with.  She thought I was crazy/extreme at first, but she just signed up for fertility friend (woohoo free VIP days for me!) and purchased a BBT after her first experience of getting her period 5 days "early."

  • No one has looked at me like I have two heads or anything, but I don't know anyone else IRL who is doing the temping thing.  I do know some girls who have been trying as long or longer than me to get pregnant and I've mentioned how much I like charting to them, but I don't want to badger them about it.  I figure if they want more info or have questions, I've opened the door and they're welcome to step through :)

  • I have to say I used to be like your friends. DH and I were just going to "let it happen" and only start charting/temping if we had trouble. The more I learned about it, the more I liked it and I truly love knowing more about my own body, let alone the benefits while TTC.

I have one friend who just found out she's pregnant and she did chart while TTC, but she's the only person IRL that seems to understand the charting process.

  • I love the title! The few people I have told think it is either really interesting or think I am nuts. I got my BFF charting and another one thinking about it. We all agree that temping and charting is an awesome window into how our bodies work.

  • My SIL had her first LO in November.  She's one of the only ones that I talk to about TTC.  Every time I talk to her about temping she tells me I'm wasting my time.  Apparently she just plugged her cycle into an O calculator and that's how she found out when she O'd.  I still can't believe it.  After she delivered her LO via CS she found out she has one overy.  Lets see, that means in the 6 months she TTC she O'd 3 times and she used an ovulation calculator to figure out her date.  Man I wish it was that simple.

  • Yup.  I have one girlfriend that gets it, and that's it.  My BFF tried temping, but since she's expecting her first LO in about 7 weeks, I don't think she really got the hang of it.

my older sister has one ovary...the one ovary actually compensates for the other ovary being gone and ovulates every month

I told my older sis about temping/charting and she acted like it was an extreme measure to only be done if you're having TTTC ::sigh::

  • i get so mad when i talk to people about temping, they always say you just need to relax... Im sorry i didnt realize that taking my temp every morning was psychotic.... i just like to be informed! lol

  • I totally understand where you are coming from. All my friends who have kids have gotten pregnant "the natural" way, whatever the hell that means lol. Unless they too aren't talking about temping! It's possible. But my three friends that I really share a lot with one of them got pregnant the first time she had unprotected sex and tells me to "relax" all the time, the second has no trouble getting pregnant just by being stupid and forgetting her pill or not taking it because she thinks it makes her fat and the third is single. I do feel like The Bump is really the only place I can talk about these things openly and where everyone understands.

  • I just got two of my friends who are thinking about having kids to definitely start temping. They told me I would have to teach them all that I know, since I'm an "expert". I told them they will be reading TCOYF before class begins.

  • I have one friend that understands. I love it. It worked for 2 years when not trying to get pg and then worked after 3 months when trying to get pg. I hope it works this time.

My mom thought I was out there too.

  • I'm really lucky to have some nestie friends that I've *known* for a while who temp so I can talk to them. But my bff irl doesn't know that I do it - her dd was a whoops and she basically just looked at her dh and got pg with her ds so trying in general is a strange concept to her.

  • I totally used to be like your friends. I swore up and down that I would never try so hard when it came time to TTC because I was afraid it would make it feel like a chore to do, which would take the fun out of it and only frustrate us both. I still feel that way to a certain extent, so while I'm temping and keeping track of things myself, I try not to share too many details with DH. And we aren't talking to anyone IRL about trying, so I have no idea what our friends would think.

  • Most of my friends know that DH and I want kids in the near future and just think we are not 'not trying'. Few know that we are activly trying. My BFF is awesome with us TTC and asks questions about temping and ovulation all the time. She is super supportive. She's looked at my charts with me and is interested in the whole TTC process. Her BF is going to propose soon (he told me) and they want to have kids soon after they get married, so she's eager to learn  :)

But yes, I also have other friends who think it's stupid and a waste of time b/c 'it will happen when it happens'. I personally love temping/charting. But I'm a huge nerd and love learning...

My argument to them: what does it hurt?

  • DH saw my FF chart for the first time yesterday and he said "Geez, why weren't you a research scientist, we could have been filthy rich by now." Bwaha! I'll let him keep thinking it's really complicated. :)

I'm so glad I chart! I'd have been caught totally off guard this month! I actually have fertile signs 5 days earlier than the last 3 cycles. Which sucks considering I may have O'd as early as CD11. Still waiting on my temps to show.
