DD getting tubes on Wednesday :(

DD is getting tubes on Wed.  The ENT wanted to do it next week but then I mentioned we are due to get on a plane on Thurs and she said we had to do it on Wed.  She said otherwise the trip would be very painful for DD because she does have fluid in her ears and they are a little red.  This means she's had her latest EI for over 3 weeks.  She went through 2 round of antibiotics and it didn't knock it out.

I felt the appointment was very rushed.  They were running behind and I guess I don't have any questions that went unanswered but she was in the room for maybe 7 minutes total before we were scheduling the surgery.  It just felt quick.

Tell me its for the best and it'll be ok?  I'm nervous about the anesthesia.

Re: DD getting tubes on Wednesday :(

  • Boo for the appointment being rushed, but A will do just fine.  It's an easy peasy procedure, and she should feel relief right away.  Where are you having the surgery done?  A nurse from the surgery center DD had hers done at called me a day or two prior with lots of detailed info and gave me the opportunity to ask any further questions, which helped calm my jitters.  Try not to worry though - it's definitely for the best!

Ditto pp. Nove went under to have her tongue clipped at 10 months. I won't lie, I freaked. But it turned out to be fine and relatively quick. Our anesthesiologist was great the day of, taking her time, answering more questions. I asked the nurse that called a few days before a TON of questions. And she was super patient and explained every minute detail and timeline. Definitely ask more questions when they call, it made me more comfortable knowing exactly what to expect, when we could nurse before and after, etc. Good luck!
  • I don't have any experience with tubes, but I'm sure she'll be just fine and feel so much better from now on.  (((hugs))) Let us know how it goes.
  • She will do great and you will be so glad you did it.  It's super easy (DD is on her 3rd set!) and will make a big difference - especially on the airplane.

After her first set, DD went to her Gymboree class just a few hours later as happy as she had ever been.

    Good luck!

  • I know it's scary but when she feels better you'll be so glad she had it done. DS has not had EI since his tubes a year and half ago. I do know they are still possible though. He had his adenoids removed too and even with both things being done he didn't sleep any longer than normal that day and was eating popcorn by the same afternoon.

Our ENT is super quick too so I understand the "rushed" feeling. We were in his office 5 minutes for both the tubes appointment and when we decided to do DD's tonsils. When you think about it why would it take any longer? Our kids either need the procedure or not. By the time you get to an ENT there are chronic problems that probably need to be fixed.

At least by getting it done so quickly it allows you less time to freak out and you'll get extra cuddle time with DD.

Did you see Zapata?  She spent a decent amount of time with us, but I had a crapload of questions written down.  I wouldn't say it was longer than maybe 15 minutes though.  Don't worry, it will be fine!  And yeah, better to rush a little for the plane aspect.

No, we saw Dr. Stierman at ENT Center of Austin.  She was nice, just quick.

  • Everything will be alright and it is for the best.  L had this EI that just would not quit.  We finally got tubes, then about a week later went on a plane.  He was awesome on the plane.  Neither take-off nor landing bothered him.  He has been sans EI since.

As for the rushed appt., I don't remember our appt being that long either before we were scheduling the surgery.  I spent three times as long in the waiting room.  The surgery is easy-peasy.

    Don't worry mama!!

  • Oh, I totally understand your nerves, but she will be great, and you'll be soooo glad you did it!  Kennedy got hers 3 days before her first flight, and it was basically a non-event, aside from the waking her up and leaving the house at 5:00am.  The surgery itself was super quick, we had a portable dvd player for her to watch while waiting for the surgery (because that part seems to take forever), plenty of snacks for her to eat after (because girlfriend was HUNGRY), snacks for DH and me while she was back there (because we were also starving but didn't want to eat in front of her while she was fasting), and then we were done.  We came home, she napped, and when she woke up, it was like nothing ever happened.  Except no more EIs, no more screaming when lying down, etc.  She'll be great!!

  • I'm so glad A will be getting some relief soon! She will do great and so will you, I know it.

Ditto this.  From everyone else's comments, sounds like this will be a great thing for your LO.  Hang in there!

  • It will be fine and trust me it is harder on you than her.  Allison had her tubes put in when she was 9 months old.  They were in and out in no time.  Hardest part was the grogginess that she had waking up.  She was inconsolable for a couple of minutes but once we assured her that it was ok and we were there she was fine.

If possible make sure DH is there with you.  You will need his support to not freak out and he might be the one to calm her better after the surgery.  That is how it worked for us.

  • Its for the best and you were leaning towards tubes anyway, its just hard that its rushed so you don't have as much time to get used to the idea.  Of course the idea is scary but it will be over in no time and everything will be great.  Think about how much better A will feel now.

I keep telling myself that!  I was thinking it was a good idea a month ago, so why am I so nervous now??  I think you are right that it just feels a little rushed.  I know we'll all be ok and be glad we did it.  And maybe its good that I don't have a week to think about it.

Thanks sweet ladies.  I appreciate the kind words and support.  I know that this isn't a big deal in the grand scheme but its my baby so it feels like a huge deal.

  • I have no tube-related advice, but just wanted to say that I'm sure everything will be A-OK.  I'll be sending good thoughts and prayers your DD's way!
