Thrush?

If you've ever had it, what were your symptoms? My right breast is burning when he nurses. I use a nipple shield. Sometimes he sucks so hard my nipple pulls through the holes on the end of the shield so that might be the burning???? I dont know if im just paranoid or if i should call my doctor. Its not that painful just uncomfortable. I was gbs+ and i know that influences thrush so it might just be in my head. Baby is nursing fine. Advice?

Re: Thrush?

  • This is probably TMI, but as a frame of refrence...  I had it and my nipples were super red.  It felt like I was being stabbed with needles in my nipples, and I had a rash all around my breast.  Not fun at all!!!!!  I hope you start feeling better.  It sucks bad!!!!!

Oh and if your doctor gives you a script, ask for the ointment instead of the cream.  It stays on better and makes you better much faster.  I was also on an oral med too.  Good luck!

  • My nipples were really red. They burned when he nursed but also burned just as much when he wasn't nursing (a good way to compare thrush vs poor latch/shield problems). I also had a lot of stabbing breast pain. I was given a script for nystatin ointment and diflucan. After each feeding I am cleaning my nipples with a vinegar and water solution and am also taking grapefruit seed extract and probiotics. Not sure what in my hodge-podge treatment plan is working but something is because I am finally feeling better.

I'm glad you posted this because I had the same question.  Since Saturday I've been getting a stabbing pain in my right breast.  I just left a message for my LC to ask her what she thinks of my symptoms.  I hope she calls back soon.

  • Oh, another thing!  Like PP said.  Wash your breasts after every feeding or pumping.  I had lactation tell me that I should be rubbing a bit of expressed milk on my nipples after each feeding.  Then I talked with one of my friends who is a pediatrician.  She said that the milk has sugar in it which the yeast feeds on.  Making the "thrush" worse!!!  As soon as I started washing with soap and water I noticed a difference!!!

Like the PP's said, it's very painful and feels like constant stabbing in your breast. It hurts really bad when LO latches on and the entire time nursing. Does your LO have white patches in his/her mouth? That's a pretty good indicator that it's thrush. I took antibiotics for mastitis and developed thrush after, which is pretty common.

The good news is once you get the oral medication the symptoms start to subside within a couple of days. My breast felt much better after 24 hours and even better the next day. LO's mouth cleared up right away.

    Good luck!
