Trying to Get Pregnant

Metformin and Ovulation

Anyone have any luck with using Metformin to induce ovulation?  I've been on it for now going on 3 cycles and take 500 mg 3 times a day but haven't had any luck gettting my body to ovulate yet.  I'm just curious if it's pointless to even take since it doesn't seem to be working.

  • The way I understand it, is that it has to build up in your system and most individuals require 4-6 months of metformin treatment before ovulatory cycles occur, but I would suggest talking with your Dr. about your concerns.

  • It worked (works) for me. I agree with Milliways that I have heard it needs to be in your system working for a while. That being said I have heard of women getting pregnant their first month on it. Take the Met and your temp and see what is going on. Good luck.

  • Hi. Like some of the other ladies mentioned it can take several months for it to build up in your system and it does not work for everyone. My personal experience with metformin was it took about 4 months plus a little acupuncture before I started to ovulate. Best of luck!

This! My doctor told me that metformin can take up to 6 months to work and if by month 7 you don't ovulate on your own then the chances of it alone working are slim. I finally ovulated on 2000 mg on month 6. Another thing to take into consideration is diet and weight loss can play a big part in if met alone will work. Good luck!

Thanks ladies. My doctor told me nothing about any of this.  In fact she told me that she was putting me on Metformin to regulate my long cycles and all they've done is gett longer.  Needless to say I have made an appointment with a new doctor and I see her on July 11th.  I've been working out daily and trying to lose weight but have been unable to no mater what I do.  I'm in the gym at least an hour 5 days a week for the last 8 months and I work with a trainer at least once a week.  I watch my calories and try and eat a lean protien low carb diet.  I have not been diagnosed with PCOS but I suspect that I have it.  My old doctor found a diagnosis hypothyroid and quit all testing.
