Dumb Question: How can you tell when a prefold is too small?

We've been using GMD Yellow Edge since 1 month old. She's hovering around 13 lbs. or more right now and it seems like they're not fitting as well.

The site guesstimates the baby can wear yellow edge until 6 months which seems a while from now.

The main reason I think they're getting too small is it's harder to snappi' them on as easily as I did before and the fit looks a little wonky now.

Thoughts?

  • My son is 14lbs and we still use the orange newborn sized ones.  However, we stopped doing the angel fold a while ago and do the trifold now.

What size covers are you using?

Interesting. We use Thirsties Duo Wraps and Flip covers for prefolds. I haven't really had any problems except it's getting harder to get the prefold on her... might just be she's more wiggly now ;-)

  • I prefer to size up when the diaper is too small to Snappi. But if you trifold, you can usually get more use out of a diaper.

I thought about that but I really like to reuse my covers and we're still in the EBF poop stage so I know it would get on the cover.

  • Depending on the size of your covers, you might be surprised about how well the poo is contained on the PF.  I used XS and S covers that fit snuggly with the trifolded PF in it, I just spread the back of the trifold out and put it under her bum (in the cover) then folded the trifold tighter through the legs then spread it back out over her belly and put the cover on nice and snug. The EBF poo tended to go forward and back but stayed on the PF 90% of the time because the cover held the edges of the PF snug to her bum.

I find this doesn't work as well now that I'm moving into OS covers with snap down rises- they're not as close fitting all around.  I'm also finding that now that she's pooping more volume, less often, it doesn't contain the poo as well.  But neither do some of the folds with snappi's either lol...  But, right now I'm loving my Bamboo Terry Flats from Orange Diaper Co. because the oragami fold is working wonderfully for containment and keeping my covers clean :) (plus the bamboo is wonderfully absorbent for my heavy wetter!)

PS: I don't know if there is an exact answer to your original question, it's likely just a matter of preference.  I don't like extra bulk, so even if I have to be a little tricky/careful with my fold with my yellow edges, I'll stick with them (and my flats) until I absolutely can't make them work anymore.  I hate folding down the rise of PS's since they're so bulky in the middle as it is.

  • Well, J. is 10 months and about 22 lbs. And the yellow edge GMD PFs are our go to PFs. There's no way we could snappi them around him anymore. We just trifold them in the cover and I spread the back out. Plus, we are just too lazy to snappi anymore. I'd rather have more covers just in case poop gets on them to allow me to be lazy than get by on 1 or 2 less covers.

Yes, sometimes poop gets on the cover. But I prefer to have less bulk. (Note: I love his fluffy bottom, but I don't want it to be extra fluffy for no good reason.)

So it's just a matter of preference.

  • I think my guy was in the reds around 14 lbs or so. I would size up if they're hard to snappi.

  • I think it's very dependent on the child! I stopped using the standard infant prefolds (green edge, usually listed for 6-15 lbs) when I could no longer easily snappi them. He was 13 months and over 20 lbs.

GMD yellow edge are the same rise but a little wider. I don't have any of them, but I'm pretty sure that he could still fit in those quite comfortably right now (16 months and about 23 lbs).

But I figured I'd get red edge instead, since those should last him till potty training. They're still quite large on him, but they work OK.

So, I can't even imagine a 13 lb baby too big for yellow edge Smile But I think DS must have a weird body shape or something because I do hear about people going to red edge before 6 months...
