Food Allergy

coconut is a treenut?

I just read that the FDA now considers coconut a tree nut ?  it's rare but still many people that are allergic to tree nuts are also allergic to coconut.

I saw this on a recent blog and never heard it before.

EDIT - i know coconuts grow on trees. But i never considered it as a "nut"

Re: coconut is a treenut?

  • Yea, it's confusing.  I think they started considering it a tree nut about 5 years ago.  My daughter is allergic to coconut, but negative to other tree nuts.  Some people don't agree they are tree nuts.  Who knows?!

  • I heard Dr. Wood say that the FDA mistakenly added it to the tree nut list for labeling purposes.  He kind of rolled his eyes when he said it. But technically it's a fruit, not a nut.

  • I tested positive for pecan and pistachio, but negative for coconut.  But coconut, even the oil, makes me just as sick as the other tree nuts do.

  • Asher's allergist said a coconut allergy is pretty rare.

  • i think it's probably just as much of a c*ap shoot as the rest of this allergy stuff.  I don't think it's really a "nut" but I can see how the FDA would label it that way based on the name alone....we are peanut allergic and avoiding all tree nuts but were okayed to have coconuts (we use the coconut milk in everything) and haven't had any issues.

  • I've always thought it was strange that the FDA considers the coconut a tree nut. Then the devil's advocate in me could also argue that an almond isn't TECHNICALLY a tree nut either...

eh, in the end I am just happy for every new item that is added and MUST be part of the disclaimer. Total transparency would of course be best, but we'll start with coconuts.
