Moby vs. Make your own wrap

Someone posted the other day how to make your own wrap. I know the Moby is just a long piece of fabric. Is there a benefit into purchasing the Moby instead of making your own from jersey knit or gauze?

Re: Moby vs. Make your own wrap

  • It is a LOT of fabric--long and wide--so a Moby may break even on cost, depending on what you get. Plus factor in the time sewing. Used Mobys are cheap and common on Craiglist in my area, so that beats buying new or making one IMO. As far as all wraps in general, I think a stretchy wrap is an ok DIY one for a new baby, but nice, woven wraps are truly designed for wearing in the weaving process and a DIY may get diggy as baby gets older (plus wrap fabrics are usually certified as not containing any heavy metals). I don't know anyone with a DIY non-stretchy wrap that loves it.

I do, but ignorance could be bliss Wink  Also, my wrap is quite wide, so I make sure there's enough fabric behind DS's knees so it doesn't get diggy.  We'll have to see what happens as he gets older.

My DIY not-stretchy is a tablecloth that has been halved lengthwise and then  french seamed end to end. Not gonna lie, I am obsessed with it. Granted I have only tried on some giras and didys at meetings, and still plan on buying a Didy this winter, but for the $25 I spent I am SUPER pleased. That being said, If you are buying fabric from Joann's don't forget a coupon, or a used Moby will surely be cheaper!

I love my osnaburg...but a big part of that is the dye job and the length--DD has been getting fussy in our usual carry with the longer wraps, because she HATES having her head covered at all(hats at the hospital were something of a battle), and since my osnaburg is shorter, I can do shorter carries without having huge tails.  Also, even including the cost of dye(5 different colors, some of them multiple packages), paint/stencils, etc, I think I wound up paying around $50 for a OOAK size 5.  I love my Orkney, too, but it cost more than twice that.

All that said, since DD is currently still less than a month old, we may in future decide we'd like something a little more wrap-intended than the o-burg, as she gets heavier...but while she's just a little squish it works great.
