Diaper pails?

Am I the only one confused about finding the 'right' diaper pail? I have looked on Amazon at reviews for all of them, and of course there are negatives on every single one. I really want one with a foot pedal and one that isn't too short, since I'm tall. It seems like the Diaper Genie Elite has the best reviews, but the expense of the refills is bothering me. They are flipping ridiculous!! And you go through them quite often, according to the reviews....one about every 4 weeks with an infant. Does anyone know if you have to use the special refills with these pails, or can you just use your own trash bags too? Any 2nd time moms have experience with one that they really love? TIA!

Re: Diaper pails?

  • I found diaper pails to be great in the beginning (We have the Diaper Genie Elite, one downstairs and one upstairs). You can fit a bunch of those tiny newborn diapers in one refill. As he got older though, we stopped using them because I felt like I was changing it out pretty often. Now I just take them out to the trash.

We are really considering cloth diapering this time around, so I wont have much use for them anymore.

I was hoping/wondering if I would get any answers like this. Thanks! Smile

  • For my first baby, we used the regular diaper pail with foot pedal.  It was just perfectly fine.  The genies seem exhorbitant for a baby's refuse.

I use regular trash bags in the diaper pail.  When I remove a dirty diaper, I just roll it up like a burrito and use the velcro tabs to hold it together (to prevent smells).  At the end of each day, as part of our bedtime routine, I just take out the trash (also to prevent smells).  I never had a problem with smells or cost of refills, and we plan to do the exact same thing with our upcoming baby.

I'm sure that the genies are great, but it was unnecessary for me.

  • We have the Diaper Champ & LOVE it.   I can use regular trash bags with it & it keeps the stinkiness inside.  Just hold your breath when you change it Wink

  • I used the diaper genie at first with DD. I loved it but it does get irritating when you forgot to pick up a refill for the diaper genie. You do go through the refills often so it tends to get expensive.

Not to mention, if grandma or anyone else changed my daughter, you have to show them how to use it. I showed my mom a million times how to use the diaper genie and she could never get the hang of it. Tongue Tied She would just stick the diaper in the diaper genie as if it was a reg trash can. I had the first diaper genie (not sure if it does this with the 2nd one) but when she would do this, it would not twist right therefore, I would end up digging all the diapers that she had stuck in there and having to put each diaper into genie and twisting between each diaper.

The diaper genie was great for keeping out the smell but after a few months with DD, I switched to a regular trash can with a lid. I plan on doing the same with LO.

  • We have mostly CDed, so we didn't get a diaper pail, but to me, they just seem like an expensive gimmick.  When we have used disposables, we almost always plopped the poop in the toilet.  This really cuts down on stink.  When the diapers were getting stinky or for particularly bad ones, we would immediately take them to the outside trashcan.

  • We're cloth diapering so I bought a regular Hefty trashcan that you press a button for it to pop open, and I bought 2 Planet Wise liner's to put in there. All we'll have to do is grab the pail and dump in the washer all together.
