Hi I'm Heather and just moved here from Georgia last week. I've been trying to find a midwife in SA/Boerne area that will accept Medicaid. I can't seem to find any on my own and I really do not want to have my baby all juiced up in a hospital. I've heard some horror stories and since I'm totally unfamiliar with Texas I'm pretty worried. I'm trying to find a job with benefits but until then I have no choice but to be on Medicaid. I can't afford Bradley classes or a doula so if there's any chance that I can have an un-medicated birth with the insurance that I have I would be so happy. In Georgia I had an awesome midwife that accepted my Medicaid and I already miss her!
Re: Are there midwives that accept Medicaid in SA?
I can't help you with the midwives because I had my son at St. Luke's however I wanted to let you know about San Antonio Birth Doulas. Their mission is to bring Doula services to teens and low income families, they may be able to help you with a doula or give you the contact information for a midwife. It also appears they have free childbirth classes. Hopefully they would be able to help you out. The website is https://www.sabirthdoulas.org/
Also destination maternity has free prenatal yoga classes along and other informational classes that could be useful in helping you prepare for the birth of your little one. Best wishes for the birth experience that you want.
I'm pretty sure Lonestar Midwives accepts Medicaid, and they are amazing. They do deliver in a hospital, but you can still have an unmedicated birth in a hospital setting. I second the recommendation for SA Birth Doulas. I've worked with them before (not for my own births, but others) and they were incredible.
Also, what part of Georgia did you move from? Just being nosy! I'm originally from southwest GA.
I totally got an appointment with Lonestar midwives later this month, I am so relieved and very excited to finally find someone. I will probably deliver at St. Luke's. My due date is right around christmas, so that's a whole different concern with my delivery... but I am not going to stress it. I wonder if I can have a birthing tub at St. Luke's?
I moved here from Atlanta, but I went to college in Savannah, Ga. I also lived as far up as Commerce & Gainesville, too!
St. Luke's is great-- I delivered both of my kids there. As far as I know they do not supply birthing tubs, but you can ask if you can bring your own. They do allow you to get in the shower during labor, which can help. The best thing about having the midwife there was that my labor felt calming and quiet-- which is saying a LOT, because I was at 9 cm and going through transition when I got there!
I grew up near Americus, GA but lived in Decatur for about 6 years. I went to college at Agnes Scott. I absolutely love the Atlanta area!
