BM stash-- how much?

Im sure this has been asked, but since my baby turned into a June bug I am late in the game.

I just started pumping once a day. How much should i pump into each bag? 2oz? 4oz? or a full 5oz?

Re: BM stash-- how much?

  • I have a June bug too (Congratulations)

This is what I'm doing :

I'm BF'ing and pumping. So each day when I do "bank" some milk for the stash, I put 5oz in a bag. This is because by the time I go back to work LO should be eating 3-5 oz each feeding, the way its going he'll be at the 5 since he's almost at 3 already.  I'm also making sure I have at least a day and a half worth of milk "banked" in the freezer before I return to work. So that will be about 10 bags of 5 oz's. So far I have 3 bags.

  • I put 6 oz in each bag.

  • I do 5oz because we already make LO's bottles 5 oz.

  • For now, I've been freezing in 3 oz increments. Unless you know how much your baby takes from a bottle, it's hard to know how much to freeze in each bag.

  • I have been freezing in 3, 4, and 5oz. amounts. I have more 3oz than any other amount though. I figure it's better to thaw more if she is still hungry than waste BM if she's not.

Thawed BM is good for a full 24 hours, FWIW.

  • I do 6 oz in each bag.  That should be about 2 feedings for C when she starts back at daycare.  If she's at an in between amount I'll just combine bags or add a little to what I pump each day to make up the difference.

  • I'm storing 5-6 oz in freezer bags (whatever I get pumping) and also some small 2 oz medela containers.  That way I figure if I think I'll need 12 oz for the day I can grab 2 freezer bags and a small.  Hopefully this way I can get the combos I need with the least waste! But I'm really hoping to be able to pump at work for the next day and not really need to use the stash on a regular basis.

  • So far I've just frozen 2.5 ounces at a time.. but I am just pumping on the weekends and maybe once every other day right now.. whenever I get a free moment, and I don't pump til empty, more like I pump until she cries and I need to go tend to her. ha.

  • i put away 6oz in each bag. I have already gotten 20 bags stashed so 120oz. I went back to work already but I still pump him fresh milk before work because I'd rather do that now because I still can. After I stop though I'm sure we'll be getting into the stash.
  • I pump 3 ounces into storage containers (the ones that attach to Medela pumps) and 6 ounces into breast milk bags.
