How much - Liquids/urinating?

Now that Hudson is completely weaned from the bottle I feel like he's not taking in enough liquids.  We offer a sippy of milk or water (sometimes watered down juice 1/4 juice and 3/4 water - if he won't take anything else) throughout the day, but he's generally disinterested.  He probably doesn't even take in 8 oz. of milk throughout the day and I'm not even sure how much other fluids - although he eats a ton of fruit.

The past couple days he has gone long stretches with no wet diapers (8+ hours).  Is this ok?? I am worried he's not getting enough fluid, but I don't know what to do about it.

He's also been super cranky the past couple days - so I'm not sure if he's still teething or not feeling well (he had a low grade fever yesterday) and if this has something to do with the lack of wet diapers ..

  • 8 hours without a wet diaper seems like too long. I don't know of any rules about that, but I think you need to push the water.   Try popsicles maybe?  Or let him stand at the sink with a regular open cup to drink and play with?  Maybe if it's fun he'll drink more?  or a straw cup instead of a sippy?

  • We just got rid of bottles not too long ago and Ella wouldn't drink much, especially milk from a sippy either. I have a million different sippy's and think I finally found one that she will drink from (at least water or juice). The only way I've gotten her to drink milk is if I give her the sippy while she's in the stroller on a walk or in the carseat, but still that's only about 6-8 oz per day. I think she gets bored enough to drink it! :) I just give her extra dairy now, because she LOVES cheese and yogurt it hasn't been that hard.

  • It took Lucy a few weeks to really get comfortable with sippies only.  We also had to try a couple different kinds before we found one that she liked best.

I think 8 hrs. is too long without a wet diaper.  On top of trying to get him to drink more, try offering foods with higher water content - watermelon, broccoli, apples.

This. Personally, any more than 4 hrs would really concern me!
  • Thanks for the responses! We tried tons of sippies in the beginning when we were transitioning over and he was doing fine taking pretty much any of them.  The last few days he suddenly just wasn't interested in drinking much.  Yesterday when I got home from work in the afternoon he seemed to be doing better - he drank more and I also bought some watermelon and he ate 4(!!) pieces - when I was leaving for work at 3 am , he woke up completely soaked through his PJ's - so hopefully he continues to hydrate now and we don't have this problem anymore .. :)
