Asking opinions concerning BF

My 15 month old has been wanting to nurse every 1-2 hours. Before this happened he would go much longer- 3/4 hours.

It started on our vacation and he was teething a little I thought. We get home and still pretty much the same thing and last week his canine cut which he was miserable! He still won't eat solids though today he actually ate as much as his fist! He usually just sticks the food in his mouth and spits it out which he's done before when teething.

So my question is, Is he wanting to eat that often for the comfort/food or is he not getting enough and needing to eat that often??

I thought maybe he was having a growth spurt but its been 2-3 weeks this has been going on.

He has allergies and have tried coconut milk but the kid LOVES boobs.

Any thoughts on the matter?

I'm thinking maybe trying to get him to drink more milk in hopes of not having to nurse him every 1.5-2 hours but I know he gets what he needs but its a lot of feedings for me!

  • So he only got one canine?  If so, I'd give it time because those ones are a b*tch and they always come in pairs!  You could try distraction but chances are if he isn't wanting to eat solids he is going to need to nurse or drink milk (but breastmilk is obviously the best for him) more often than when he is eating well so I'd just wait it out.

  • I agree with CJP. The canines and 2nd year molars suck big time. My DD is also working on hers and she climbs up on me at least every hour to nurse or comfort nurse because her gums hurt so badly. And if your DS is getting his first canine now he has three more to fight through the pain with.

Yep, sounds like teething--which you knew!  You have good instincts.

We've been doing the two-year molar fun.  DD went from nursing only before nap and bedtime (and at night) for the past six months or so, to all day, every day.  So frustrating (and sore-making!).  But the teeth are breaking through.

It seems like whenever I'm thinking "what the h is going on?!" I find out soon enough, lol.  Nursing habits are often the first way that I know something is going on.

On the nutrition question, your milk is mostly a supplement at this point.  It always makes me feel better that when DD doesn't eat, I know she's at least getting something good, you know?  DD didn't drink cow milk for ages--but now she likes it.  Just keep trying your alternative milks--eventually it'll taste good.  And your milk is fattier, so it might be better at this point given his lack of interest in solids.  The renewed interest that teething brings to nursing isn't so much about eating and is much more about comfort.  Plus there are analgesic effects of your milk.  You could try giving him something for the teething pain (even an ice cube) instead of nursing, or just before--could cut short or nullify a session or two.

  • I agree with everyone else.  It wasn't until about 18 months that I had good luck cutting back feedings with DS.  Those canines are just killer!

  • Thanks guys!! Ya he was a wreck with these! I know all 4 are coming in too its just a matter of time. Their all puffy and he always gets at least 2 but usually 4 at a time.

I am not really looking forward to the 2 year molars :(

I hope the next 3 will be easier as I think the worst for him is when they move down.

I'll wait it out it just gets so hard when he wants it every second it seems like! I feed him and seriously 5 min later he's signing it! But hopefully it won't take too long to get them in.

    Thanks again!
