Bed Rest

So I went to the Dr.'s for a check up on Thrusday and my BP was 154/100. They had me therer for about an hour and it dropped to 124/100. If my BP did not drop they were going to send me to L&D. I had to have a bunch of Blood work done and I called Friday to find out that my blood work came back "Normal." I have to collect my pee for 24 hours starting tomorrow and take it in on Monday. I will find out then if I will be put on bed rest for the rest of the time till Baby H comes.

Has anyone had this problem or on bed rest? I think that I will go crazy being at home on bed rest but it will be better then being in the hospital.

Re: Bed Rest

  • I had a similar situation with DD1, but I think I was closer to 36 weeks.  Everything checked out ok and I wasn't put on bedrest fortionately.  With this LO my dr is threatening a modified bedrest because of the frequency and strength of my BH.  Of course I don't want to be on bedrest and I don't want LO to come early either!!  But with having two LOs already it's hard for me to slow down especially when I have been trying because I knew they were getting to be too much.  I'll do whatever my OB tells me to for the safety of my baby, but it will be hard!!

Good Luck with your tests and keep us updated.

  • Yes -- and I am on hospitalized bedrest for these very reasons.  My bloodwork was initially normal, when I came in Memorial Day Weekend (for monitoring), but my BP was 170/110, but went down to 135/82 within an hour.

They kept me for observation and did the 24-hour urine catch, which came back at 305.  The threshold for normal is 300, but that's for a singleton, and there is no defined research on what the number is for twins, although they usually see numbers in the 600-800s for twins.

I also had swelling in my ankles/feet (it was 85+ degrees outside when I came in!), so I was diagnosed with Pre-Eclampsia, and have been hospitalized since.  I will be here until the twins are born.

For extra support, check out the High-Risk board.  Also, you can reach out to Sidelines.org, a support network for those on bedrest.  (You can request an email or phone buddy, if you think that would help -- I LOVE mine!)  Finally, if you want to PM me, I'm happy to help!!  I'm entering my 4th week of hospitalized bedrest...  Just know that the first 7-10 days are the hardest, and then it gets easier.  I don't know why, but it just does.

    Thinking of you!!!

  • Yes, this sounds a lot like me. I'm 32w6d. On Monday when I went to my OB appt my BP was 142/95. I've had no previous BP or protein issues. My feet and ankles were very swollen as they have been for a couple weeks - but it's 100 degrees here in Dallas! After having me lie on my left side and taking it again a few times in an hour it was still coming up in the 140s/90s, so they sent me to L&D.

I was there for about three hours, my BP stayed up for the first hour or so and then gradually started to come down. They were monitoring LO the whole time and his heartbeat and movement were great. They discharged me at 133/78.

I did have to go back the next day for a sonogram and to turn in the 24 hour urine sample. The sonogram tech said that when I was laying on my back the placenta only seemed to be getting about 50% of the normal amount of blood, but when she had me lay on my left side it immediately jumped to a normal level. My blood work and 24 hour urine catch came back normal, but I'm officially on bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy. Starting on Monday I will be having my BP monitored from home once a day.

I am thankful to be on bed rest at home instead of the hospital, even though it is definitely getting old quickly! I'm happy to do what I need to do to keep LO in there as long as possible, and I'm just hoping that the BP continues to respond to bed rest and that protein doesn't start spilling in my urine. My OB mentioned a few things like lung development and steroid shots if something does change quickly and she has to deliver - so scary!

As far as the bed rest I'm allowed to go to the bathroom, go make a sandwich or something quick in the kitchen, and take one quick shower a day. I'm trying to spend as much time as possible on my left side both during the day and at night, especially after what the ultrasound showed. The worst part of the bed rest is how sore my back and hips have gotten, especially on the left side, and I've started to have a really hard time sleeping at night I think because I'm so inactive all day and my body is tired of laying down. Bedrest isn't fun, but it's totally doable and worth it to keep LO inside longer. I hope you don't have to go on bedrest too, but if you do it is manageable...good luck!

  • I too, have been taken out of work and on bedrest. Last Wed my bp was 157/78 which panicked my OB. I was up in L&D for about 6 hours. Had to do the 24 hour urine catch, which came back normal. Went to the OB yesterday and my bp was 128/70 which is good.  I now go to the Dr. 3x a week. Id take being at home on bedrest than the hospital. I was miserable in there.

    Good luck!

  • I just started my 16th week of bed rest, at home, but for incompetent cervix and PTL.  It is hard for about the 1st week and then gets easier, it has become hard again the last few weeks again.  I'm not going to lie it does get lonely and boring however you just have to remember it has to be done to help get the baby hear not too early and being healthy.  One thing that helps get me through the day is remembering that every day the baby isn't born early is an average of 3 less days spent in the NICU
