Thoughts on Hank

Not Henry, just Hank. We have a few boy options, but nothing is sticking. We keep going back to Hank-- it was on our list last time but was poo-poo-ed by my family because "it's a nickname, you can't name a kid Hank". But we love it, and I know we shouldn't care what anyone else thinks. But maybe we are crazy, and it isn't suitable for a first name...thoughts? Middle name is August.

Edit: and I should add that yesterday at our NT scan, the tech guessed boy. And of course we only have a girl name picked, so now I'm paranoid she's right and it's a boy.

Re: Thoughts on Hank

  • I think it's great for a middle name!

  • I agree with your family ? fine as a nn, not as a fn.
  • I think Hank is a great nickname, but I believe you need to give it a little more thought before making it a given name.  It's going to be commonly assumed (and often) that Henry is his actual name, so you'll always be battling that correction.   There's a mom on my home board that named her boy Charlie, not Charles, and recently vented about how family members don't get that the kid's not Charles.  Get used to that.

Also, think ahead to when your cute little boy is no longer a cute little boy.  He may prefer the more formal option if he becomes a doctor, professor, CEO, etc.

  • I think I'm in the minority, but I've always thought that Hank sounds more formal than Henry. Maybe because Henry ends in y like many nicknames and cutesy pet names? I think using Hank would be just fine!

  • Bah! Nickname, shmickname--and this is from someone who usually hates when people name their children nicknames. Hank for Henry is such an old nickname that it doesn't sound like one anymore, IMO; Harry is a nickname for Henry, too, but it's become its own fully-fledged name by now.

Hank sounds strong and masculine, and it's well-recognized, but not too popular. I love it. :)

  • I love hank as a name! I would like to say, dont worry about what yours family thinks but I, myself, refuse to tell family our name cause I dont feel like hearing their opinions. Im a wuss
  • I think of it as only a nn for Henry. I'm sure it could stand alone, but I don't prefer it.

Henry is one of my favorite boys names though : )

  • Funny how split it is-- I do think it stands on its own better than some nn names. Like how Jack is a nn for John-- so many people just name their child Jack now.

    Anyway, thanks for the opinions!!

  • I love it. Seems playful and masculine at the same time.

We have a "Drew" that isn't short for Andrew.

I would only use it as a nickname.

I don't like it, but Huck is a guilty pleasure name of mine. Don't know why but it's cute to me, just throwing that name out there...lol.

  • This is what I think of when I see Hank...not necessarily a bad thing...he went to the Olympics :)  I don't mind the name as a fn.  I think I like it better as a fn than a mn, actually.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE!

Edit: be advised, you're not naming a kid Hank. You are naming a person Hank
