I feel like my friends have all mentioned "oh baby never even got to wear that before he/she grew out of it". So, how do you buy enough, but not overbuy before they grow out of it? Is there a reference manual for this sort of thing? ![]()

Re: How do you know how much clothes to buy?
Well for me had about 6 outfits in 0-3 and a few newborn things. That's it until Bailey came. Thank goodness I didn't buy more b/c Bailey was 9lbs 12oz and went straight to 0-3. Then he only stayed in those for a month before he was in 3-6. He's always ahead in clothing sizes. Then I got pg with Bryce so I figured he'll probably be big too so I got mostly 0-3 things but not a lot. The little stinker came out at 7lbs 4oz and when we left the hosiptal he was 6lb 10oz. So needless to say the next day we went to carters and brought some newborn stuff. Bryce pretty much is right on with sizes according to months unlike Bailey.
I would buy some newborn and some 0-3 until the baby gets here then buy more. I brought gymboree with gymbucks in the hospital bed right after Bryce was born.
Its hard because every baby grows differently. I think generally, you don't need too much in the newborn sizes and only comfy clothes, ie. onesies, sleepers, socks, lightweight pants. I would say 10 onesies, 5 sleepers, 4 pants in newborn only because they can go through a lot of clothes in a day with the first messy diapers but usually grow out of them in a few weeks. Owen was in 0-3 months for about 2 months so I used more of these and had cuter outfits because we were out more and showing him off. Maybe 20 outfits in 0-3 size. We were in 3-6 months also for several months and I had the most clothes in this size, a bunch that we didn't get around to wearing. I probably had 50 outfits in this size. My sister and Mom went a little crazy with the first grandbaby shopping. Once you get to 6-9, 9-12, 12 months sizes, we weren't changing clothes multiple times a day so I didn't need quite as much. I would just try to have a good assortment in each size prior to baby being born. You can always buy more later. It's also a little hard to guess what size for what season since you don't know exactly how they will grow. I only washed the newborn and 0-3 stuff before he was born and had the rest organized by size in his closet. As he grew, I would pack stuff up and wash the next sizes.
It's so fun to shop for baby clothes! They are so tiny and cute. This is also why any clothes you receive as gifts will mostly be newborn and 0-3 size because everyone wants to buy the tiny, cute clothes.
Happy shopping!
Oh just buy them all
Ditto. LOL!
YEP!

It's so hard because you have no idea how big (or small in my case) they'll be and how fast they will grow. Someone on here said it was a good idea to have a couple of little premie outfits in the beginning. I brought one to the hopsital and it ended up fitting Ethan best. He was not that small, 7 lbs 5 oz, but even the newborn stuff was huge on him. He wore newborn size for quite awhile where other babies completely skip that size!
The nice thing is they do spit up and have tons of blowouts... perfect opportunties to put on new outfits.
Abigail was 7lbs10oz when she was born and was in preemie for about a week and a half, and in newborn for about 6 weeks after that. Abigail wore most of her clothes and we had a HUGE amount, it was ridiculous. The few she didn't wear was usually because they were gifts that weren't really my style.
Also, keep in mind, if you're having a girl, you'll likely get more clothes than anything else (at least that was the case with me! I didn't get much from my registry or practical items, they were mostly clothes) People LOVE buying baby girl clothes! So, you might want to hold out buying much until after your shower(s).

This was my motto lol. I wish I had bought more because Akira was in Newborn clothes until about 6 or 7 months old and Now at 10 Months she is still in mostly 0-3M. It really just depends on how fast they grow.
ditto this!! seriously lady everyone buys baby girls clothes for showers. you will get a ton of them!
I'm a huge fan of consignment stores/sales, partly because of this reason. Lots of people have clothes their babies seldom, if ever, wore, so much of the stuff is practically brand new and much cheaper than new. Also, if you baby never gets around to wearing it, it doesn't feel quite as bad if you only spent a couple bucks on it. :-)
I wouldn't buy too much though because once your LO is here, you'll figure out you like some stuff more than others. For example, we seldom used onesies for my DDs. For the first few months, we just used footed sleepers. I also found dresses weren't terribly practical until they were walking. When they were little, they were annoying since DDs were generally buckled into something--car seat, bouncer, swing, etc. Once they were crawling, skirts/dresses just got in the way.

I had a boy and everyone still bought us a ton of clothes so I am glad I didn't shop before he was born! But I think I am rare and I know it will be too hard for you to abstain so I won't recommend that
Instead I will say that everyone buys the tiny clothes. T never even wore NB and all of a sudden we needed 3-6 months and had hardly anything.
One thing I found out in the early months is the things I wanted to buy and the things I actually dressed LO in were different. So don't spend all your money now because you might change your mind about the kind of stuff you want her to wear once she is born.
