Sore a week after delivery?

My son is a week old today. I had a very long labor and pushed for what seemed like forever! This is my first LO and he was only 6.4 pounds. Well it's been a week and I am still very sore down there. I had a first degree tear and between the pain from that and the soreness it still hurts pretty bad to sit. I am wondering if this is normal and if you are a 2+ mom how long should I expect this to last? Tylenol doesn't seem to help much. :(

  • Totally normal. I think I over did it a bit and made it worse. Just take it easy and it will calm down before you know it.

  • Yes, my LO was a week yesterday and I'm still a bit sore, especially if I'm sitting in a chair that's not real soft! I also over did it over the past week and need to just take more time for myself to just rest.

I was very sore for over 2 weeks.  I just finally feel mostly back to normal and it's been a month.

completely normal.  I can't remember exactly how long it lasts, but the good news is, should you choose to give birth again, it's much better the second time around!!  I'm not sore at all and haven't been since before we left the hospital.  With my first DD, I had a long and painful recovery (a very deep 2nd degree tear/episiotomy and three hours of pushing).
  • I was fine the first 3-4 days then it got pretty sore I would only sit on my sides or hips if you can picture that. Definitely kept up with my Ibuprofen to keep some of the swelling at bay. I found that when I skip, it would feel really heavy and swollen down there. Keep off it for a while and careful sitting with your legs or cheeks too far apart. I had a 3rd degree tear and my LO was only 6lbs 7oz. I also tend to overdo it when I start to feel better. DH had to reprimand me for doing this. But hang in there, it will eventually get better. My hospital sent me home with some topical anesthetic spray, Dermoplast.

  • I was definitely a sore a week pp. All I can say is that every day it gets better! I'm just past 2 weeks pp now, and I feel pretty good, still a little sore at times.

  • Thanks everyone! Guess it's just one more of the things our bodies go through with these babies!

  • It's 2 weeks for me and I'm still sore, but it's getting better (at least I can poop now).  I had a 4th degree tear. Ick!
  • I just gave birth 4 days ago - definitely still very sore. I had an episiotomy and only have 2 stitches, but I'm still taking Motrin 600mg every 6 hours, which was recommended by the doctor. I also coat my pad with 2 witch hazel circles, and sometimes Epifoam that the hospital sent me home with, and it's very soothing.

  • ds was born on the 6th and I had an episiotomy and 3 "running stitches" to repair.  I'm still sore at times, especially when I sit on the toilet.  I feel a decent amount of pressure down there.  Can't wait until it's healed!  And this is my 2nd, with dd I tore and had stitches then too.  I can't say for myself that this one is better.

  • I've also been pretty sore (12 days PP) and sitting down hurts more towards the end of the day than in the beginning.  Earlier this week, I went to my OB because the pain was getting worse and radiating to a larger area than just the perineum.  I was experiencing some bleeding that showed up further back on my pad than most of the bleeding.  Turns out that one of the stitches ruptured and the 2nd degree tear is not healing as well as it could.  I mention this only as a caveat to go see your doctor if there is any unusual bleeding accompanying the soreness.
