2nd Trimester

Should I be Concerned?

I had a pretty decent first trimester.  I had nausea throughout the later part of it for the majority of my fternoons and into evenings.  I only threw up once if I recall correctly.  However, the last three weeks (since entering my second) have been a nightmare.  I have nausea all day and am throwing up EVERYTHING I eat every few days.  The funny thing is - I only throw up at night.

Two nights ago the vomiting was so bad that I hurt my throat (felt like there was a lump in it) and the acid burned my inner lip (how, I don't know).  Yesterday I was literally afraid to eat and what I did manage to eat (some crackers, water, and an ice pop) did stay down but not without a lot of dry heaving.

Today I have managed to eat a banana and a piece of toast but I feel horrible.

This is my first and I don't want to call the doctor over everything but I worry that something isn't as it should be for me to be this sick all of the sudden.

Thoughts?

  • My m/s didn't start until the 13th week and lasted up until about 1 1/2 weeks ago (though I still get nauseous at times, I dont really throw up anymore) and it was only at night but every night. I would say make sure first and foremost that you are drinking alot of fluids. Unless you are underweight, I would say your baby is most likely still getting the nutrients it needs. Also, look into changing your prenatals and what time you take them. If none of this helps and you cant keep anything down, I would go into the doc or the ER and make sure you are getting fluid. Otherwise, at your next appointment I would talk to your OB and see how he/she feels about taking B6 supplements or getting on Zofran

  • This sounds awful! I'm so sorry you're suffering so much! I can relate to having a fairly easy first tri....I had zero morning sickness, was just extremely exhausted. I haven't been sick in the 2nd tri so far either, BUT I do find myself feeling nauseated after a meal from time to time (especially if I eat too much).

I have had a couple concerns where I have called my doctor....as long as you're not being overly crazy and calling every day, they will NOT look down on your at all. That's what your nurse and doc are there for! If nothing else, I would call to see if you can get a prescription for Zophran (sp?); I think this is what all the girls say they get prescribed for bad morning sickness. Feel better!

  • Call the Dr.

Even if it is just delayed morning sickness they can give you Zofran. And if it is something else, they need to know about it. At this point you might be dehydrated and not getting enough nutrients.

To make you feel better, I call the first day I couldn't keep anything down.  They didn't treat me like I was crazy, they just promptly wrote me a prescription for Zofran and that was the only way I was able to function for about 8 weeks.

In the mean time, drink gatorade not water (water can actually make it worse when you are that sick - per my nurse), and get some sea bands.  One of the only things I was able to eat was ramen noodles, so you could try that too.

But honestly, you have suffered long enough.  Call the Dr.

100% agree! If you have really been that bad then I would be extremely worried about dehydration. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Call the doctor.

  • I had a bad reaction to my PNV around week 12 or 13 which brought on 2-3 weeks of m/s and throwing up.  Then it simply went away.  I also changed PNV.

Getting enough calories is more important the further along you get so if it doesn't get a little better ASAP, or you cannot eat larger meals for breakfast to compensate I would definitely call your doctor.

  • yes, drink Gatorade instead of water- it will keep you hydrated and also give you the electrolytes you need.

I was very sick my first pregnancy, and don't want to scare you with what I had. I will just tell you that hydration is the most important thing you can do right now. The only thing that helped me (somewhat) was Tums for the nausea.

    Good Luck!

  • Are you taking your PNV's in the afternoon/evening time?  If so they might be the reason for you being so sick lately and you might want to try neew PNV's.  My doc told me that's why I was so nauseous in the evenings because that's when I was taking mine.  I switched mine and i've felt good ever since.

I also agree with the drinking of Gatorade, that helps a lot when you can't keep much down and are getting dehydrated.  Also yes, call your doc!  good luck and I hope you feel better!!
