Food Allergy

would you trust it?

my local health food store has two nut grinder machines (almond and peanut) they are right next to each other and i totally trust that there is no CC when they are adding the nuts.  it is the only place i trust.. and have spoken to numerous people.

But lately i've been worried that a customer might want to mix the nuts and put some PB in a container and then right after put some AB in the same container and the PB will hit the top of the machine.

Would you trust that no one mixes nuts?

Re: would you trust it?

  • I don't think I could trust it. My daughter is very severe to peanuts though, so that affects my answer. The allergist said peanut dust will probably affect her as bad as if she actually ate a peanut.

  • it depends on the severity of his allergy.

also- could you ask them about how/when they clean the machines?  If they are cleaned/steralized daily then maybe you can get there right when the store opens one morning so that you are the first one to use the machine?

  • His peanut allergy is really high. Dust sets him off also.  Being in a house that is peanut friendly he can get a pretty bad eczema.

I actually didn't think about asking them when is the next time they clean it and being the first one.  I will call them and ask -and that might be the only time i get him almond butter from now on.

Not sure why it didn't bother me before but  probably b/c now i'm more aware b/c of this forum.

  • I would not trust it for a hot second.  Getting there right after it's cleaned sounds good, but I'd be asking a lot of questions about how they clean it.  Then again, if the machines are side by side, when they dump the peanuts in, you know that dust is settling over on the almond machine too... if the top is open, voila - peanut dust on the almonds!

  • Not only would I ask when and how they clean it I would also ask them to move it farther away from the peanut machine because it is harmful to be right there.

  • Normally I would say no, but if you've been using it for some time already and your son hasn't reacted to it then it may within his tolerance levels.
