December 2011 Moms

Stroller Question

Just out of curiosity (and if you don't mind sharing), how much are you planning on spending on a stroller? Or 2+ times moms, how much did you spend in the past? DH and I are starting to look into this and are feeling overwhelmed by both the variety and the price range, so I'm curious to see what the norm is. My inclination is to invest in a good stroller (I'm willing to pay up to $400) since we will use it for such a long time and for hopefully multiple children. But then again, I also know that high price does not equal high quality. Thoughts?

  • We're getting a travel system that's $280. I'm also contemplating getting an umbrella stroller but DH thinks they're too expensive and I don't want to buy one of those cheapie $20 ones.

  • The stroller I want (Baby Jogger City Mini) is about $250 but will require some accessories (car seat adapter, tray for when baby is old enough to sit in the stroller, etc) that will probably add another $100-$150 to the price.

  • With my first our stroller/carseat combo was about $400 (came to $380 ish). My double was just under $1000.

  • we found the stroller i wanted- the icoo pacific- for a great deal at $299. it was originally $467. I don't think we would have spent that much but $299 seemed reasonable so we got it!

  • We've already bought our "main" stroller - Amazon had last year's BOB Revolution on sale for $300, so we snagged it. We do a lot of "off road" activities, so it fit our lifestyle (and it's super-popular in Colorado). Depending on needs, we might get an umbrella stroller down the line - we'll see.

We've already been reprimanded by friends and family to give them a chance to buy us stuff, so we'll register for our carseat (and the stroller accessories like the carseat adapter and weather cover).

  • I bought a chicco travel system and it's nice, but the stroller quality is just okay-manuverability is good, but not stellar.

I bought a baby jogger city select about 5 months ago, and it's night and day. My kid HATED the chicco stroller, but loves the baby jogger-higher position, better flexible seating, and I LOVE it too!

I bought it brand new in box on eBay for about $300. It goes on Amazon for $499.

We are also going to be investing in a BOB duallie, which is totally worth it IMO. It will either be an eBay purchase or a craigstlist lightly used one.

  • I'm getting the Chicco travel system. I saw the stroller at Target and it doesn't seem as bulky as other travel system strollers. Later on I'll get a jogger on craigslist or something. I see really good ones listed all the time.

  • The last time we bought a stroller, a double, I think we paid abou $150 or less for it.  It's a Graco.  Still have it, works great.  However, I need something with a 3rd seat for my youngest dd and the two I sit for.  So I will be buying a new stroller in the fall and will be paying about $330 for it.
  • My stroller that I keep in my car for running errands and what not was $180 and my jogger for walks and jogging (before my injury) was $140ish but I snagged it for $100.

  • We got a Graco stroller frame to use with DD's carseat ($60?  This was four years ago) until she was six months old, then a Maclaren Volo ($100, I think) which we still use three years later.  We also got a hand-me-down stroller, like the Maclaren but heavier, which we don't use much and could certainly live without.  And that's all.  I'd like to have a jogging stroller and might get a BOB this time around just because we don't have to buy a ton of new stuff.

I think it's a good idea to start out with a Snap 'n' Go or other inexpensive stroller frame, then assess your needs as your child gets older.  For us, weight was a big issue, which was why we got the Maclaren, which is just under 10 lbs. and has gone all over the country with us.  Some people need more features than an umbrella stroller can provide, but since our main uses are travel and walks around the neighborhood, and DD has always liked the Maclaren (I've run into moms whose kids don't; I think they might have started using the stroller when their kids were older and used to more cushy strollers), it's been great for us.  I think it's difficult to find one stroller that is perfect for everything - I mean, you can't jog with the Maclaren, but I'd hate to take the BOB to a store with tight aisles - but it depends on what your activities and priorities are, and they're different for everyone.

  • I have a city select, but bought the 2010 when it was discontinued to make way for the 2011's.  It's a $500 stroller that we got for just over $300.  We need it because it can be a double (and we don't really like side by side doubles).  The seats come off completely and it can be used as more of a snap and go frame while they are in their infant seats (will need adapters).

So far we LOVE it, even though there are no babies to put in it yet.

  • I spent about $300 on a good jogging stroller, not because I'm an avid jogger, but because of their maneuverability and durability.  I got a BOB Revolution and have never regretted it.  That thing moves like a dream and is compatible with most car seats out there (we have a Graco Snugride 35).  The only problem is that it's large.  If you have anything smaller than a mid-sized SUV, you'll have problems fitting it in the trunk.  It was because of its size that we ended up getting a second stroller, a MacLaren Triumph, when DD was old enough to sit in one (we got ours at around 9 months).  It's nice, lightweight, and good for travel, but it doesn't ride as well.  DD can feel every bump in the sidewalk.  She also doesn't seem as comfortable in the MacLaren as she does in the BOB.  But we live in NYC so the BOB is sometimes just not practical.

  • If you are willing to pay for it and planning on more than one child, get the baby jogger city select, or something similar.

With my first I got a graco, one of the travel system ones, it worked fine.  But when I had my second I needed a double.  I tried at least 4 used ones and hated them all.

This year I got the city select.  It was something I wanted with my first but wasn't aware of with my first.  I LOVE it.  I use it all the time, it drives great, and I can add and remove a seat as needed.  So I am not stuck with a two seater if I only have one baby, and I don't have to switch out strollers either.

  • I've been lusting after the UppaBaby Vista for at least a year now.  It retails for almost $700, but I was able to find it on sale recently for less than $500 (a discontinued color from last year).  It will be our only stroller, since it comes with a bassinet, a toddler seat, and can also be used as a car seat frame.  UppaBaby sells a rumble seat that turns it into an in-line double, if we need that later on.

Many of my friends swear by the Baby Jogger City Mini, which retails for less than $250.

This is what I got, too. I never would have been able to buy it for full price, but got one on 1 day Gilt sale for 50% off. Did you get the yellow one, too?

  • We did a stroller system and we love it. I suggest going to babies r us and taking EVERY stroller for a test run around the store. We did this (much to the workers dismay I am sure) and ended up with one we LOVE! It was about $300 for everything. However, you plan on using it for a long time, but that totally depends on your kid. DD started trying to escape around her 1st birthday and we have rarely had her in it since she was 18 months. I am still glad that we got the one we did because we are having more kids. But the pricier isn't always better... it is personal preference when it comes down to feel, how it works, height, etc.

  • I want a stroller that is reversible, so the baby can face us. Only a few of them are like that and they are so expensive. So I found the Bumbleride Flyer, but I haven't been able to test it yet. It costs about $360.00 and I believe it's the most I would spend on a stroller...
  • I think our stroller was $240 (Baby Jogger City Mini) I went through like 6 strollers, thankfully my BRU was awesome about returning.

Next stroller I plan on getting the Baby Jogger City Select. Since it can be changed from a single to a double stroller with relative ease.

If it had been out when I got the city mini I would have got that from the beginning.

  • I've been reading reviews left and right, and have been in the stores trying out strollers.  My favorite is still the Bugaboo Bee, even though it's very pricey -- $600 w/o the accessories or car seat adapter, etc.  To me, it's worth it.  This is my first, this stroller lasts from infant to toddler, and it's built to last.  A few years ago, the brakes were known to break after a year, but the latest ones are said to last a long time. It has a 5 year warranty, too.

  • We got a Bumbleride Indie for about $500.  It is AWESOME!!  With #2 coming, I will probably get a Joovy Sit & Stand for about $400.

  • First let me just say my husband is picky and does everything in his power to avoid things "made in china" and would rather spend a few extra dollars for better quality that will last through several kids.

We got last years model peg perego on sale for around $400 which included their car seat as well. I love the car seat however I am not a fan of the weight. Husband loves this system because it's made in Italy and was mostly made of metal vs plastic than can break over time. Hopefully it was a good decision to let the hubby chose!
