Northside Delivery ?

I have two questions for those ladies that delivered at Northside.

1) We are getting ready to sign up for a childbirth preparation class and a breastfeeding class and I was wondering if anyone else took them there, would you recommend your instructor?

2) We are wanting to donate our sons cord blood but my doctor said that Northside does not have a program. She said that we could get a kit from somewhere and bring it with us. Does anyone know anything about this?

 Thanks ladies!

I heart Ben!!

Re: Northside Delivery ?

  • I took the one day just Mom BF class and it was great.  I just didn't feel comfortable having DH in there talking about boobs with tons of other people.  We would have just ended up laughing the entire time.  But I BF both boys for over a year.  We also took the baby essentials, CPR and birth class (the one that meets like 6 times).  I don't remember the instructors names but I'm sure they are all great.

We did Corecell for cord blood.  Check with the company.  Some give discounts for your health insurance.

Good luck.  Northside is a wonderful place to deliver.

  • We did the couples breastfeeding class at Northside, which really came in handy when DS #1 would not latch and hubby remembered some of the different positions and advice when I was so stressed out.  It also really gave him some idea of how hard it could be, so he didn't think I was crazy :)  I have no idea who the instructor was, though.  We didn't do the cord blood thing.  Good luck with your delivery!

  • I wonder who you guys had for your breastfeeding class?   I took the BF class at Northside 3 years ago and it was awful.  The instructor kept saying things like "sorry moms of girls, but your baby will love their daddy more" and when she couuldn't work the projector, called it "retarded".  Most of the class was being told why we should breastfeed which was redundant, and her nuggets of wisdom like "babies don't like rap music".

Then we were ready to learn about positions, she had ONE doll for all of us to pass around.  She also said to take back our Boppies and Brest Friends pillows because they were useless and told us to use regular bed pillows instead.  And of course she had only enough pillows for one person to use at a time.  I was SO disappointed and felt like it was a waste of time.  I didn't need to be sold on breastfeeding, I wanted info on HOW, which was sorely lacking when I took the class.  I did complain to Northside and they seemed to take me seriously.  She was a larger blonde woman....Come to think of it, there was someone there "auditing" the class and she was frowning the whole time.

My OB was totally on board with donating cord blood.  Before getting the kit, I had to complete a questionnaire and have my OB sign off on it.  I unfortunately couldn't donate because of my British blood (risk of Mad Cow) but the whole process was pretty easy to navigate.  I'm sorry I don't recall where I got the kit from.

  • I don't know about for Northside in town, but if you can make it to Northside Cherokee or Emory Johns Creek for a breastfeeding class with Lynn, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend it. She KNOWS her stuff. She's also a NICU nurse, so she's familiar with other aspects of newborn health, etc and how those issues can affect breastfeeding. I think I paid $50 for the class, and something like $100 for the childbirth class I took, and I think the 3 hour bfing one was worth about 10 times as much as the prep class.

Looks like she's doing two upcoming ones at Northside Cherokee - https://www2.northside.com/Classes/Classes/Breastfeeding/Location/25

The Johns Creek event/classes website seems to never work but the people on the phone line are pretty helpful. - https://emoryjohnscreek.com/events-classes/index.html

  • to answer #2, we did CBR cord blood registry. Signed up, got our kit, took it with us, told my ob and the hospital about it (they asked) and had it ready to go to collect blood when baby was born. and a little while later, a representative dropped by to pick it up and take it to the storing facility. easy as that. my practice recommended cbr over viacord.
