Swimming after d&c

Hi guys,

I had a d&c last Tuesday (13w2d, but the baby died around 8 weeks, which we didn't know) We have decided to get away for a bit to grieve and come to terms with our loss. On Sunday we will leave for Mexico. On my discharge papers from the hospital it says no baths/swimming for 2 weeks. I checked with the doctor before my procedure, and he said it would probably be fine since I would be almost 2 weeks post when I leave.. but I am still a bit worried, and not sure if I am remembering correctly because this was around the time my conscious sedation was administered and my memory is fuzzy.

Any one have any experience with this? I am still spotting, but it seems like the heavy bleeding is over, however I also thought it was over before and it started up worse than ever.

I'm sorry for you loss. 

My dr. cleared me to swim two weeks after my d&c. Hope your trip helps you heal.

I'm so sorry for your loss.  I hope you enjoy your trip!  My follow up appt. was 1 week 4 days after my d&e and I was cleared for swimming then.

I don't know if it makes a difference but I saw my doctor one week post, she didn't do any internal exam she just pushed on my belly a bit and that was it. I forgot to ask her about swimming though

Would it be possible to fit in a follow up appointment prior to leaving?  Then the doc could clear you to swim or not.  I went to the beach 2 weeks after my D&E and wouldn't have wanted to swim anyways.  Something about not being able to wear a tampon and having what I call a "slow leak" make me content to sit on the sand with a book.  That's just me though.  Enjoy your trip!

No, I am leaving on Sunday and my doctor isn't in tomorrow and doesn't have any appointments today.

My post op sheet said no baths or pools for 2 weeks... basically no standing water!!

I would say if you find yourself not enjoying yourself like you could be bc you want to swim (be it too miserably hot like it is here in TX), then just go for it... especially since you will be so close to the 2 week point. Like several women on here have said, most women are cleared as early as 7 days post D&C at their follow ups. It all depends on whether or not your cervix has returned following the dialation.

And if it's the ocean - salt water is definitely not as bad as the bacteria filled lakes and swimming pools.

Thanks guys! I called a nurse and she said 2 weeks and if I am still spotting I can use tampons too after 2 weeks, so I will try to stay out of the water the first 2 days.
