VBAC

36 week checkup

Background:  I had my first growth u/s (I have GD) at 33 weeks and LO was estimated to weigh around 5lb 9 oz.  Monday, at 36 weeks, I had my second u/s and LO was estimated to weigh 7lb 7oz.  And I *know* they can be off by more than a pound in either direction but it still took me aback a little that I've got 4 weeks left.  Not to mention the tech said "Wow.  You're brewing a big one."  I really wish they'd not say anything.

Today was my appt with my OBGYN.  All is perfect with my NST and my GD numbers.  I'm not dilating and am 70% effaced.  I don't know why but I went into my appt a little discouraged over the estimated size of LO, but my doctor assured me that things looked ok for my vbac.

Also, when I was diagnosed with GD  around 30 weeks he said he wouldn't want me to go past my EDD.  Today he said he may be willing to let me go one week past my EDD if things were still looking ok.

Re: 36 week checkup

  • Just remember, those growth measurements can be off by up to 20%.  And it seems in most cases they overestimate.  At 39 weeks, they told me she was 8lbs 14oz.  She was born at 42weeks1d, at 9lbs 1oz.  So, that's only 3 ozs in 3 weeks or the measurement was wrong.  Either way, I would try not to worry about it.  Just keep doing what ever you were planning to do to bring on labor in a few weeks.

  • I'll tell you what... my OB convinced me to have a sched'd c/s with my first because of macrosomia (big baby).  She estimated him at over 11 lbs.

DS was born at 41w3d weighing 7lbs15oz.  WAAAAYYYYY off!!

Don't stress about the numbers...  just keep telling yourself that YOU CAN DO THIS!!

  • Does your doc measure you each appointment?  Reason I ask is because my growth u/s was off by a lot.

According to the doc's tape measure, I always measured right on schedule.  I got the growth u/s because we were flagged for a study that was being done in my office.  Anyway, at 39 weeks, the tech estimated my LO to be 8 lbs 12 oz.   DD was born at 40 weeks, 4 days and she was 7 lbs 8 oz.  According to the u/s, she should have been close to 10 lbs. Tape measure was a lot more accurate than the u/s.

Yes, he does measure me at every appt.  I've been consistently measuring 1 week ahead the entire pregnancy.  I asked him how the fundal and u/s measurements can be so different from each other and he said that while the u/s can be off by a pound in either direction, it's more accurate at this point than the fundal measurement.  However, he did say that yesterday my fundal height measured 3 weeks ahead, so I guess the two measurements weren't so different after all.

I'm thankful for everyone's support.  I knew I could find reassurance here.
