2yr Well Visit Qs - Hep A Vax and WCM?

Toodle had his 2 year well visit today and he's doing great! Only concern doctor had was that he has somewhat flat feet (runs in our family) and suggested making sure any shoes we buy have arch support...BUT some Qs for you ladies:

1) I forgot to ask Pedi about this, but while I know the general rule is that it's ok to give 1-2% milk now, if our guy is a bit of a stringbean, is it ok to continue on whole milk? Did anyone else here stick with whole milk after 2? Toodle is not a great eater and is 37%ile for weight (92%ile for height, so not perfectly proportional) and DH flat out refuses to switch him to lighter milk for fear he will starve. Thoughts?

2) Did anyone's LO get diarrhea from the Hep A vaccine? Toodle had his second dose today and seems free from reactions except he had some diarrhea earlier today (or very soft stool at least) which is SUPER abnormal for him. Usually he's holding onto furniture and straining and turning red for 20 minutes.

Re: 2yr Well Visit Qs - Hep A Vax and WCM?

  • We just had DD's 2 yr well visit Tuesday.

     1) We still do WCM for her and my 4.5 yr old.  They don't have all that much of it and I think it's better for kids, especially since the one we buy has DHA in it.  I would just keep him on WCM.

    2)  DD didn't have diarrhea from the Hep-A shot and I'm not sure if there's a connection between the two but maybe.

  • I still have my DD on whole milk.  She is also a little stringbean and my DS will be on WCM soon and don't want to buy two different kinds of milk for them.

I don't have any advice on the Hep A vaccine.  Maybe a quick call to your pedi to make you feel better?

  • My pedi "allows" 2% or skim after age 2, but you can stick to whole. Nolan gets whichever because DH and I drink skim. Linc gets whole.
  • My son is a big big milk drinker and much prefers it over food.  We switched to 2% for him about a year ago. This little bit has some good info on the calories and fat in varies types of milk: https://pediatrics.about.com/od/milk/i/05_milk_2.htm.

We made the switch, DS didn't notice and he continues to drink a ton of it and has stayed on his own personal growth curves.

This is the same for us.  My DD just switched to WCM, and I am NOT buying 3 different kinds of milk for all of us (skim, 2%, and whole).  DS is super skinny, and barely drinks any milk anyways (neither does DD, unfortunately).

  • We were told to keep Maya on her whole milk as she is in the 10th percentile for weight.

It seems like Maya had a little diarrhea after her Hep A but it was a one or two time thing.
