Success after IF

HELLO from Minnesota! We made it, tornadoes and all!

Well, we made it. It was quite the adventure at points but the girls did AWESOME.

We left at 6am (2 hours behind my schedule) on Saturday and hauled a$$ to Bozeman. It was long but beautiful and I was SOOOOOOOO right to make the 1st day the longest (12ish hours with stops and such). We stopped for lunch in Spokane, ran Rhayna around and then everyone napped for a couple of hours. We arrived in Bozeman and checked into our hotel. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! YUCK!

Left Bozeman around 9am and our destination was Bismarck but Mother Nature had another plan. The skies in ND were on-and-off ominous but nothing this midwesty hasn't seen before so we pushed on. Everytime, it ended up clearing within moments (thanks flat plains!) until, well, it didn't. We passed Dickinson, ND with blue skies, patchy cotton ball puffs and sun for miles....and then we were about 15 miles past (note: there aren't towns between - it'll go 100's of miles without even a gas station up here yo!) and the sky instantly turned black and let it's fury down on the earth. We parked under an overpass assuming it was just rain. And then it was very clear to me, growing up here, that this was much more than "just" a severe thunderstorm. I was driving and started getting back on the interstate and my husband was like WTF and I said, "WE HAVE TO SEEK SHELTER" (he's a WA boy through and through - to him, rain is just rain no matter its form or function). We are listening to the radio's warnings and watches but have NO idea where these towns are as our phones have ceased working (THANKS SPRINT!) and we're all tech-savvy and sh!t and didn't bring a map (insert eye roll here).

The radio is saying "rotation spotted 15 miles south of Hebron" - Ok, Great. A fricken tornado is a-brewin' (in a former life I would have purposefully driven 15 miles south of Hebron to catch a glimpse of this sucker but ohhhh, what shootin' a couple little beans out your whoo-haw does for self-regulation and fear factor!)

So we pull off at this road and squint to look at the sign for what "towns" are at this exit and sure as sh!t - HEBRON 4 Miles to the NORTH (note: we're now about 11 miles from the forming twista but it also says "NO SERVICES IN HEBRON" so our only choice is to go SOUTH, towards the twista to a town called Glen Ullin which is another 5 miles from our point so we are driving towards the forming tornado that is heading towards us at 30 miles per hour....I can't give you the mathimatical run down on time vs speed vs position but all I know was "WE ARE DRIVING TOWARDS THIS MOTHER!"

With 3 miles to go until Glen Ullin, the speed limit changes to 20 miles an hour and there's a car DOING THE SPEED LIMIT! We blow around them at 70 and get to a Cenex Gas Station where the 12 year old behind the counter has NO idea if their bathrooms are bricked in or what to do in the event of this sort of weather BUT she knows there's a bed & breakfast in town and they have a basement. She calls, they have room and we look on weather.com for where the cells are and it looks like we have about 7 mins until the next cell hits bad (mind you, its pouring so bad and so black out at like 7pm you can't see but 3 feet in front of your vehicle anyway but when the cells would converge, it would wipe your car away). We toss the girls back in the van and haul to the B&B. We get there, get them inside and we loose power. Luckily my awesome husband had stuffed an LCD flashlight in my bra and two in his pocket (giving one to Rhayna) but the power comes back within 5 mins.
The cell arrives and water starts pouring in these people's house, basement, etc....it was like armagedon. Owen, poor guy, had to go to the van to get some of our stuff (I HAD TO PUMP!) and the water was up to his calf, lapping in the back gate of our van and moving fast (a creek next to the B&B was overflowing to say the least). There was lightning everywhere and he had to make multiple trips in and out to bring our crap in. It was terrifying. I didn't want him to get electricuted!

Long story short (yea short, right?! HA!), a tornado passed within 4 miles of us.

The entire time, Rhayna was singing "The wind began to switch, the kitchen took a pitch, it landed on the wicked witch in the middle of a ditch, WHIIIIICH was not a healthy situation for the wicked witch!" (from Wiz of Oz, her fave movie). She had been looking with binoculars the entire trip for a tornado and, well, FOUND ONE and couldn't be more thrilled with herself!

We arrived in MN the following day (Monday) and just poured ourselves into my mom's house and rested for a couple of days. Now my mom has both girls, we are 2.5 hours away in our house in Duluth just taking a break. Last night we went out for sushi and I think I had some bad wine or something because I got violently ill in their bathroom and then felt fine - very weird. Owen thinks I'm pregnant HA!

Now the renno starts! Anyone in MN want to come and help paint?! I have a beautiful 4 bed huge craftsman you can come and stay in! Right across the street from Lake Superior!!!

Anyway, I've missed you ladies! My phone died (as in would not connect to the network) and so I couldn't even chat with you all during our trip!
