D.C. Area Babies

Breastfeeding resources in Alexandria

Does anyone know of informational classes or resources about breastfeeding for moms BEFORE they have their babies? Someone inquired with me about that, and I thought I would toss the question out there to you guys. I know there are Inova classes you can register for (which are probably aimed at moms with newborns, now that I think of it), as well as information from the La Leche league, but if you think of any other options in the area, will you let me know? Many thanks!

Re: Breastfeeding resources in Alexandria

  • Not in Alexandria, but there is the breastfeeding center in DC

otherwise, just the classes that hospitals offer on breastfeeding.

  • when I was pregnant, our Mamistad group had an LC come and give us a BFing class, I think we each paid her $20 or $25.

  • Breastfeeding Center or LLL meetings are my go to places. I actually wish I would have gone to a LLL meeting while I was pregnant...it would have been so much nicer to have those connections before.

  • LLL meetings (in addition to info like their website and The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding) are great for expecting moms.

I think that any midwife/LC or doula/LC would be happy to consult on this.

In terms of reading, there are books at the library on nursing plus great websites like https://www.drjacknewman.com/breastfeeding-help.asp and kellymom.

  • I took a class at Arlington Hospital (Virginia Hospital Center)  on breastfeeding. I don't remember the name of the class, but the teacher was a lactation consultant/nurse named Susan Howard. I thought it was really helpful!
