pumping...wwyd

typing one handed as i pump...

my boobs leak a LOT.  like filling 2+ pads every hour.  i've been just dealing with it (tight bra, cold compress) hoping they calm down so my supply will regulate to meet LO's demand.  she's a great eater and is gaining weight appropriately so i'm not worried that she's just not eating enough - she pulls herself off when she's finished eating too.

anyway, it's less than an hour after she ate and my boobs are FULL again.  i just pumped to relieve some of the uncomfortableness.  i pumped for 2 minutes and got 2 oz.

on one hand this is nice, i can build my freezer stash for later.  but am i just messing things up and making myself produce more?  i haven't been pumping daily, just maybe once a week when i can't handle the full boobs.  would it be ok to do just a couple times a week like this and have enough in the freezer for later bottles.

wwyd??

Re: pumping...wwyd

  • I don't think pumping a couple times a week will impact your over supply. I would go for it. I've been pumping 4 oz a couple times a week and haven't noticed any change at all.

    Thanks!

Way too hard not to overanalyze all this.  I don't want to make them worse....I've already gone through boxes of breast pads, ugh.

  • i had this problem everytime. I was told that I had enough milk to feed twins or triplets so I can totally relate. I never actually could get the kids to latch so I was pumping literally like every 2 to 3 hrs and getting 2 full bottles. The nurse that I had when I had Alayna told me that I was only basically making it worse bc I kept pumping it out. I would say what your doing is fine and not going to hurt anything and give you a storage supply. Just watch for signs of mastitis bc that is what I ended up with while being so engorged.

Oh no, my sister had mastitis and it was horrible!  Fortunately, they just feel too "full" and not to the point of fever or super painful.

At least you'll have a nice stash built up though. = )

Have you tried washable cotton ones? Token recommended some in a post farther down titled Breast Pads. I like my reusable pads, it saves some cash, not that you need to save cash. Wink

I agree. I pump like 3-4 times a week when I am feeling too full and I know Ashley won't eat anytime soon. Often, I pump one side only (sometimes when she is on the other!). I easily get 6oz on one side. I haven't noticed any downsides to what I have been doing.

horrible doesn't even start to describe it! I hope and pray you don't get it and I hate the fact that anyone does! I only bf Alayna for a few days because I had such anxiety about getting mastitis and how I was going to be a producing cow with 3 kids! I still ended up with mastitis...twice..and am still leaking so there is still the potential for it again :( But yes I actually had enough milk to bf landon until 5 months even though I stopped at 3 months :)

I love saving cash but I am too lazy to do that much laundry.  But if I buy them, how many should I buy? I am changing the disposables about twice an hour or every 45 minutes.  I would need a lot of the cotton ones to hold me over until the next day's laundry (and I hate doing it that often...and my housekeeper is no longer with us so it's just me!).

I got 4 boxes for either $24 or $27.  I had a bunch hof Amazon credit so I didn't mind spending it.

  • I would pump as much as possible... store as much as you can . Have you tried lily padz? I love these and they keep me from leaking.
  • I don't leak, I have the opposite problem but I have the washable ones so I don't get nipple cream on everything I wear.

I wash them out in the sink and leave them to dry until I do a full load of laundry and then I put them in there.

  • I'm totally jealous of your supply. If you would like to ship some of that milk my way I would appreciate it. As would Eliza.
