Skipping Kaiser childbirth prep class?

I'm delivering at Kaiser Santa Clara and had my 3rd Tri class on Tuesday.  During that class the instructor said that she was covering most of the stuff from the childbirth prep class related to the hospital (stages of labor/when to come in, how many visitors, medication options, etc) just in more brief terms.  My OB had suggested that I take Kaiser's new 'Coping with Labor the Natural Way' class in addition to the regular Childbirth Prep because it does not focus on natural options and I am going to try to avoid pain meds during delivery.  Now I am wondering if I even need the Childbirth Prep class at all.  Both of these classes are fee based, which somewhat plays in to my decision but I am more concerned about wasting the whole day at the Childbirth Prep class unnecessarily.  Thoughts?

  • I would say if you'll be fine.  Especially if you're going to do the Natural Prep class.  The main class just covers some very basic breathing and pain coping techniques, what to expect during delivery and when to come in etc.

  • I skipped childbirth classes for Sarah altogether. I only watched the online course Kaiser provides which had enough information for me. I think you'll be fine.

Ditto this.  I skipped it and watched the online thing.  It was fine.

  • That sounds like a great class, and hopefully it can give you good tips.

If you're planning to go med-free, definitely take the med-free class.
