starting solids tonight ::HELP::

my pedi told me to mix 1 tablespoon of rice cereal with 2 ounces of breast milk. isn't that too liquidy?

how did you mix your baby's first rice cereal?

also, did you attempt the solids meal before breast feeding? how did you do to not have a cranky, crying baby?

ps. i'm so excited to start solids!!!

  • I think I used ~1.5 oz instead of 2.  I think 2 oz was too soupy.  But, just do what looks right to you.  Add more BM if it's too thick.

    I BF him first, and then give him cereal about an hour to hour and a half later.  Solids do not replace nursing/bottle right now- it's in addition to it for practice.

  • We started with avocado, but I fed her about an hour or so after she had a bottle so it wouldn't infer with her meals. She wanted a bottle afterwards- I think to wash down the avocado. I was very surprised how well she did. I wanted to wait until closer to 6 months and really did it to 'show' my DH that she wasn't ready. I guess I was wrong...

    I gave her a couple ounces of formula then offered the solids, then let her sip it as we went. I started off mixing the cereal the way the box said to for her first feeding and it all just ran out of her mouth and she wasn't thrilled. I added a bit more to make it pretty thick and she liked it.

  • I agree w/ pp - you should feed first then wait a bit, then offer cereal.  These calories shouldn't replace meals - it's just for fun/practice right now!  Good luck!

  • I have always ignored the directions on the box.  I just pour a little of the powder in the bowl and add a little formula/bm until it gets to the right consistency. It worked best for me when it was similar to the consistency of apple sauce.  With both my LOs they didn't really eat a whole lot the first few times, just pushed the food back out. So a little goes a long way in the beginning.

  • When I gave DS his first oatmeal cereal I followed the instructions but it was too watery for him so I thickened it up. It is a lot easier for him to eat it when it has substance versus watery because otherwise it just fall out of his mouth.

    My ped said to do it after she breastfeed because they don't want it to interfere with the baby getting the nutrition from the breastmilk.

  • i think applesauce consistency is key!  my DH wanted to follow the directions on the box when we tried yesterday.  it was way too soupy so when he walked away I added more cereal :) lol!
