hearing screening

LO had another hearing screening today.  I think that is his 3rd since we left the nicu.  The one in the nicu he didn't pass then the second one he didn't pass and the next one he passed.  Then today they did the test where the put the little sensor in his ear that detects eardrum movement and it came back showing that he most likely has fluid in his middle ear again.  She said his eardrums didn't look red or "angry".   He did have an ear infection a few weeks ago.  The hearing screenings that he didn't pass also showed fluid most likely in his middle ear.  Now they want us to wait a month and come back to repeat the screening.  She said it probably sounds to him like it would sound if we were under water.  This makes me sad that my little boy can't hear things properly. WWYD- do I just wait and go back in a month or should I call and ask them why we are waiting.  I know it is because they are hoping it will clear up but since it has been an issue at almost every screening why not just move on with seeing an ENT Dr. ?  What do you think?  Anyone been through this?  Thanks!

Re: hearing screening

  • I went through something similar with my daughter.  At 6 months, we took her to an audiologist and they performed all those tests you mentioned.  They also told us that her eardrums weren't vibrating and she most likely had fluid in her ears.  My pediatrician immediately referred us to an ENT.  The ENT prescribed her a 20-day dose of antibiotics and then we retested her hearing.  The one hearing test got better, but unfortunately the eardrum still did not seem to be vibrating correctly.  We went through some waiting and some more doses of antibiotics.  Then, the ENT decided it was time for tubes.  (She was supposed to get her tubes when she was 10 months old, but surgery got canceled because she got RSV!)  She finally got tubes and her adenoids removed when she was 11 months old.

I felt so bad for my LO too.  I also felt guilty that I had never noticed she wasn't hearing everything.  After the audiology results, we really started to notice.

I think I would try to get an appointment with an ENT.  Especially since you believe it has been an issue at every screening.
