plain yogurt vs. yobaby

I was told that plain yogurt was ok to give DD. She didn't seem to have any problems with it. When I posted on facebook about it my FSIL said that yogurt is bad for her unless it's yobaby because of the bacteria in it. Isn't the bacteria what makes yogurt good for you? Idk yogurt that doesn't have to be refrigerated skeeves me out. I definitely wouldn't eat it so I'm not feeding it to my kid. I can't ask the pedi because she's on vacation right now so my question is... Has anyone else fed their LO yogurt? Was I misinformed?

Re: plain yogurt vs. yobaby

  • Maybe he was referring to probiotics? If thats the case, they are actually good for the baby's digestive system. My pedi said plain yogurt was fine. We buy organic plain greek yogurt and mix it with fruit purees. He loves it.

  • I've been giving CJ Greek yogurt with mashed up bananas.  She's quite happy with it and will lunge for the spoon.  No problems digestion-wise.

  • Yobaby is refrigerated. It's the Gerber stuff that isn't. I've never heard of regular yogurt not being okay. The Yobaby stuff has live cultures too, if I'm not mistaken.

  • Stonyfield organic whole milk yogurt is my favorite.  Yobaby has bacteria in it too. Here is from YoBaby website:

Six live active cultures. Like all our yogurts, YoBaby contains our exclusive blend of six cultures, including the probiotic L. rhamnosus. Learn more about our six live cultures.

  • My pedi said the only difference between regular yogurt and baby yogurt is that you pay about twice as much for half as much.  We get regular.
  • Plain yogurt is not bad for your LO. It's just as good (and cheaper) than Yobaby.

  • I have been feeding Ally both the yo baby and regular. I usually feed her the dino yogurt because it is a perfect size for her. My pedi said she could have anything except honey, eggs, and peanut butter.
  • Awesome. Thanks ladies. I guess I got Gerber and Yobaby mixed up. My bad.

  • Yogurt is my LO's serious favorite right now.  She lunges for it as well like a PP said.  She also makes this humming sound when we get it out of the fridge- it's pretty funny.  Will have to try Greek yogurt- we've just tried YoBaby up until now.

  • The direction I got on yogurt was to do whole milk rather than light, low fat, fat free, etc. We do both yobaby (when I have coupons for it) or Dannon plain whole milk and add our own banana or blueberry to it.

  • As long as it isn't the fat free or low fat you are good to go.  Babies still need all of that good fat for growing.  We just gave DD plain yogurt and mixed in fruits with it.
  • I also give my DD regular greek yogurt. However, I did also get the baby yogurt in the refrigerated section. It is organic and has to be refridgerated. I also think any yogurt that does not have to be refridgerated freaks me out. Yuck.
