Uterine Rupture

I know I am not pregnant yet, but I keep reading about uterine ruptures, and was getting slightly concerned.  But I just found out that that was the cause of my friend's moms RCS.  It really made me feel better, since I see that she and baby are fine.  And that was over 25 years ago.

Re: Uterine Rupture

  • The risk of uterine rupture is less than 1%, and many many of those are not life or death situtations.  Many of them do not even happen during labor and are not a result of VBAC... there is a chance any time you've had a C/S.

You should also keep in mind that 25 years ago, your friend's mom probably did not have the bikini incision or double sutures, which would make her far more likely to have a UR.

As PP stated things are a lot different now than 25 years ago.  The stitching on the outside doesn't matter (horizonal vs. vertical) its the stitching on the uterus that counts.  Also studies are showing that there's no difference between single or double- that was a crazy thought in the 90's.  Here's a great article on relative risks: https://misskalypso.wordpress.com/2011/06/04/relative-risks-of-uterine-rupture/
  • I flat out had a doctor tell me that any woman regardless of birth history can have her uterus rupture. Same doctor also told me that scars heal thicker than the tissue around them to strengthen that area in case of repeat trauma.

I also agree with PPs. Things are different now.

  • Ditto pp - in addition to the standard proceedure for c/s being different now, they are also much more conservative with their use of pitocin (generally use it at lower levels now) which makes the risk lower.

  • Oh I know it is different now.  That is why I am saying it is so reassuring for me.  Because she is fine, and it was so long ago, so now things have to be better, imo.
  • This makes me feel so much better, too! I have my moments of worrying! =P

    Thank you.
