How long do I need to wait?

I was under the impression that I was suppose to wait until my 6 week PP Dr. appt before having sex. I just read on the 0-3 board that someone had sex after 2 weeks, i'm not there yet and I'm okay with that, but is the 6 week wait standard or is it okay to jump the gun a bit? I had a slight tear and have stitches so I assumed I had to wait for those to go away. Anything else I need to wait for?

  • The way that I understand it is that it can take up to 6 weeks for your cervix to completely close. And having sex could introduce bacteria, and could end up causing an infection.

That and the comfort of stitches being gone and waiting until you are completely healed.

  • I didn't have any tears or stitches, so theoretically I might be fine before my check-up.  The nurse at the hospital told me that I shouldn't have sex before then because they've had women show up for the check-up and find out they're pregnant (since they discuss birth control options at the 4-6 week appointment in my practice).  I can't even imagine!  But I'm not sure if there is a medical reason for waiting the full 6 weeks if your body has healed prior to that.

  • My OB told me at discharge if I felt up to it at 4 weeks or 6 months it didn't matter - whenever my body felt ready (which is no where NEAR happening) that it was fine to have sex, and they would discuss BC at my 6 week appt.  I'm holding off until then, if not indefinitely at this point, lol.  FWIW - I had 2 1st degree tears and no stitches or anything, that may make a difference.

That sounds terrible!  I need no more convincing than that!! lol!  But I was gonna wait anyway- the bleeding hemmies, constipation, stretch marks, and spare tire make me feel soooo sexy  Embarrassed

  • I had a c-section and was told that at 4 wks we could if I felt up to it. But for a vaginal delivery I would for sure wait the 6 wks!! and when ever you do try make sure you use alot of lubricant to make it more comfy for you! good luck girlie and all those things that make you feel a lil unsexy are your battle scars of being a awesome super woman mommy!! so wear em proud!!!

  • I am 5.5w pp and DH and I managed to do it once yesterday. Today it wasn't as comfortable, so it was a no-go. Granted, we forgot the condom yesterday, so if I end up KU again... I did rinse thoroughly afterward both times and keep an eye on things (metaphorically since I can't actually see down there).
  • I'm waiting till the stitches dissolve. I'm ready for sex now, but these stitches are too uncomfy for sexy time.

  • We did the deed this week at just over 3 weeks pp. I had a 3rd degree tear so I told DH it might not work and we'd have to stop.  I didn't feel any pain whatsoever.

  • In my opinion, do what your doctor advises. He or she will know what is best for you. I plan to wait until after my six week appointment at the earliest.

holy crap you scare me lol

we with my first a csection didn't try for a while after bc i wasn't healing right. With my second I had a second degree tear and at my 6 week she said it was fine even though i was still sore. It took several attempts before being successful. I agree lube and lots of warm up time. After alayna it was like 3 or 4 weeks. I am thinking 4 and it was perfectly fine. Now that being said I did not tear at all with her and drove home from the hospital. My dr actually never even asked me at my 6 week if we had yet.

This.  And I'm just generally a fan of following my doctor's orders.  He did clear me to have sex in a couple of weeks since my internal stitches are healing well, I'm excited about that!

Yeah, I have never had any infections or anything down there and now is not the time I want to start.

  • When I was discharged the nurse told me a story about a teenager who had come in 2 weeks after delivering her baby. Her bf had pushed her into having sex, and she ended up with an infection that caused her death. She told me regardless of c/s or tearing/no tearing vaginal, your cervix needs the time to heal, so no sex. Scared me to death. Real story or not, if the dr. says to wait, wait. If they say otherwise, that's their medical opinion, but I wouldn't mess with it.

  • We got the ok for sex at my check up which was actually at 5wk pp. Dr. said to use lots and lots of lube. She didn't say anything about risk for infection but we had already discussed that our choice of BC is condoms since I had reactions to BC and we plan to start trying for our 2nd when Audrey is 9 months.
