Brown Specks in Formula?

On Monday I noticed a few brown specks in his formula.  I thought since the bottle drying rack is near the coffee pot that maybe a few coffee grinds got in the bottle so I dumped out the formula and rewashed and sterilized all of the bottles very carefully.  And there are still brown specks floating in the formula!

We opened a new can of Enfamil Infant on Monday so there could be something wrong with this particular can.

But we also have well water here so we use a microwave sterilizer filled with distilled water and we use bottled water in the formula so it may be related to that.

Anyone else have this problem?

Re: Brown Specks in Formula?

  • I've had some floaties in my formula this week.  I just figured the dishwasher was leaving gunk it the bottles.  I carefully inspected the bottles before mixing up the formula yesterday and still noticed a speck in one of the bottles.  I am not noticing anything in the dry formula before I mix it though.  Are you?

  • No, my formula looks fine.  I did some googling and found some posts from other boards.  Some say that a couple particles of the formula got burnt during processing and some are saying it's caused by limescale build-up on the sterilizer.  Do you have well water or hard water?  Because if you don't then that would eliminate that explanation and we could blame it on the formula.

  • Are the specks light brown? Ive had this in my bottles, if what youre seeing is light brown like mine, its definitely the formula, Ive seen it fall when I mix it in. And its funny that you mention it because when my husband and I first saw it, we were wondering what it could be in the formula. And my husbands response is that they may be "specs of protein that burst in their mouths" hahah of course he was kidding though, but it reminded me of the time we spent thinking about what it might be in the formula that we were seeing.

  • I was mixing up another batch of formula and I made sure to check the can before.  No brown specks in the can.  The second the formula hit water I saw a few so I called Enfamil.  They took some information from me and then told me about the burnt particles.  Earlier in the conversation I told them that I had tossed a few bottles of it since I thought it was bad.  They are sending me a free container and some coupons for my trouble.  I'm glad I called!
