sensory issues w/ food texture

anyone's lo not like touching food?
We had noah's preemie clinic follow up (12 mo appt). His pedi wanted us to discuss his food issues w/ the clinic. He refuses a lot of solids, will not feed himself anything other than puffs. When he touches food, he scrunches up his nose, and then won't touch again. I recently have been able to get him to eat some solids off my fork, but still...won't touch/feed himself.

Preemie Clinic dr thinks it is more sensory than actual food related, and said to have him practice touching different things...jello, mashed potatoes...etc. She wasn't concerned yet, she said if it gets worse, or doesn't get better, then we'd see an OT.

anyone else have an LO like this? If so, how long til they were eating on their own. He is 10 mo adjusted (30weeker). Not sure if it is his age, temperment, or a true sensory issue.

Re: sensory issues w/ food texture

  • at 12 months adjusted andrew was really only eating puffs and gagging like crazy on table food.

At 18 months Andrew still really wasn't self-feeding so we enrolled him in OT.  He has made crazy amounts of progress.  He still is "afraid" of things like yogurt or like homestyle macaroni, but is more willing to try many new things and eats so much better.  He will eat meat now too, which he could not handle before.

He's still young so for now I'd just keep offering, exposing him to textures, trying new things - - if things don't improve consider OT.
