Food Allergy

Hemp Allergy Testing

DD is on a complete restriction/elimination diet free of all of the 8 major allergens plus a few more. Our milks are rice, goat, and hemp. We have to use them on a rotation basis or she develops reactions to them individually. We've been fine with this system for several months now, but we've recently seen throwing up on day two (goat) and a skin reaction on day three (hemp). Since we're so limited as it is, we really don't want to eliminate more food without knowing which one it is. Is it actually something day one or two catching up or is it a quick reaction day three. Our pediatrician has agreed to test her foods since we're so restricted as it is (everybody's always been super against this until now), but they don't have a hemp test and I can't figure out what its related to. I even called the company and talked with customer service and all they could say is that it's not a nut, like I thought, but that she thought it was a seed. Any suggestions?

Re: Hemp Allergy Testing

  • It is a seed.  The hemp seed.  It isn't grown in the US, so it is probably from Canada.

I thought you could bring something in to the allergist that you wanted to test and they could administer that for you?  I was told I may have to bring cauliflower in for my daughter's skin test since they didn't have that one already for skin testing.

The only time she had a reaction that wasn't right away (day 4), it was green beans.  She was taking a few bites here and there, and then after one bite on day 4, her face was a tomato and she broke out in a rash.

I would be calling a pediatric allergist for testing instead of using the pedi for testing.

  • like miller said, it's a seed. Not grown in the US and i actually heard that hemp seeds are illegal in the US but the milk is not. not sure why though.

it's possible that your child was still reacting to the goat milk b/c when my son has a reaction.. it sometimes takes 5 days of him reacting before it starts to disappear.

I would call the pedi.  Also.. i hard that most people that are allergic to cows milk are also allergic to goats milk.  So i would take that out and try hemp again after the reaction goes away -but totally call your pedi and/or allergist first before you do anything and get your child tested.

  • You would have to bring your own sample to the allergist for testing. As for the goats milk, we were told that only 10% of people that are allergic to cows can tolerate goats. As for the hemp, it could be a seed sensitivity-hemp milk makes jacobs eczema worse, but doesnt cause hives or rashes on him, so I label him as sensitive to seeds. I would definitely remove the goats, immediately if it were me, then get some sort of test for the hemp to see if the skin reaction is from it or a carry over from the goats milk from the day before.

  • What brands are you using? It could be a cross-contamination issue. I'm Top-8 free and have yet to find a rice milk or hemp milk brand that isn't cross-contaminated with a Top-8 allergen (it's usually CCed with soy, or almond, etc.). My allergist also told me trying goat's milk wasn't worth it, because as a pp stated, most people allergic to cow's milk are also allergic to goats milk.
